Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Phantom - temperature drop??
- By crustyroll [gb] Date 07.05.06 21:57 UTC
Hi,

Just a quick question - does anyone know if a bitch will have a temperature drop in a phantom?

My bitch is 62 days from 1st mating but she isn't a typical pregnant shape and according to vet he doesn't think she is pregnant!! He did however admist that she may be just carrying 1 or 2 and still high up in the ribs.. She looks very fat and wide and we can't understand why she has gotten so wide if she isn't pregnant.  It's a long story previously on here but I didn't get her scanned to confirm pregnancy.

I am taking her to the vet tomorrow which was planned anyway but I thought I would check her temperature at teatime and was shocked to see it at 36.4 = 97.6 - I know this is low and would be a sure sign but does it happen in phantoms?

Hi Andrea

Not sure that they would get quite such a temperature drop (if any) with a phantom   I find that my girl's drop down into the 36 range 24 hours before whelping so I would stay very close to your girl now :)

Good luck :)

We were once told by a vet that our Pomeranian definitely wasn't pregnant.  8 Hours later we had 3 pups and that's a big litter for the breed!  Trust your instincts and if she isn't at least you'll have everything ready.

I took her to the vet today and after a scan they can't find anything!!! Her temp this morning was 37.2 or 98.9 and I have just taken it again and it is 37.6 or 99.6.  I did ask if they knew if phantoms produced temperature drops, but they admitted that they didn't and that it isn't something they look for.  She has been with us all day and seems happy enough.  I do have everything here in case the miracle should happen that they vet missed something but I am not holding my breath.

Thanks all

if you get a single puppy do you not feel any movement? my bitch missed and i had convinced myself she was and was heartbroken but when she actually was pregnant from about 7 weeks i could feel movement- mind you- she did have 11! i know how upset you must be feeling crustyroll but you have to look forward to next time.

we didnt feel anything or hear any heart beats ours our long coated though so its always harder to see movement on small litters

Hi All, thanks for the replies it helped me get through yesterday.  No puppies have arrived and I don't think there is one hiding in there.  She has had lots of attention today and been running around without a care in the world.  She still has swollen nipples and vulva and still looks like a little shetland pony!! Another one to chalk up to experience.

Cheers
Andrea
