has anyone ever slipped a disc in their back? what does it feel like?:eek::eek:
- By Carla Date 05.05.06 11:23 UTC
don't know, but if you have a bad back and are thinking it could be this get yourself off to your nearest chiropractor (not Mctimoney) :)
- By michelled [gb] Date 05.05.06 12:12 UTC
twas fine till yesterday.
then i felt like id been stabbed in the back & it hurt to breathe & couldnt talk!!!!!:eek::eek:
gradually got better, now i have achey ribs.

i KNOW i have to see someone...i hate going to see people:mad:
- By michelled [gb] Date 05.05.06 12:14 UTC
i lifted something abit awkard & quite heavy,no probs then i served a custmer & thats when it happened (when i was standing up straight)
- By Carla Date 05.05.06 12:15 UTC
I hate doctors etc, but I really enjoy going to the chiro - makes you feel fab after. My pelvis was out and it was unbalancing me and my horses when riding so I went and had it all adjusted. Brill :)
- By michelled [gb] Date 05.05.06 12:18 UTC
cool, dosent sound too bad. do you not rate mctimoney?
- By Carla Date 05.05.06 12:19 UTC
Nope. I believe I was told they have lost the rights to call themselves Chiropractors now, and hearing about some of their treatments on horses the words "bargepole" and "touch" spring to mind ;)
- By Val [gb] Date 05.05.06 12:35 UTC
I second that!;)  Find yourself either a trained Chiropractor or Osteopath, that's my choice but then I'm biased!. :D
But pain when breathing could also be cracked rib!
- By michelled [gb] Date 05.05.06 12:41 UTC
it only hurt to breathe for about 2 minutes, but my ribs do ache.
it also hurt to walk for about 5 minutes, but thats ok now
- By Goldmali Date 05.05.06 14:28 UTC
Michelle had you DONE something to the back that could explain it? If not I'd worry more. Only I had those symptoms and thought it was just my back, turned out it was a blood clot in my lung which nearly killed me. Anything which makes it hurt to breathe you ought to check out ASAP to play safe.
- By michelled [gb] Date 05.05.06 15:28 UTC
yes,i lifted something that was awkward & heavy (a developing rack full of chemistry out of my processer @work..designed by mini japenese men...not for strapping english lasses!) that was fine, then about 2 mins later it was just.....OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW:eek:
- By michelled [gb] Date 05.05.06 15:29 UTC
i could only not breathe/ta;lk for about 2 mins. i think my customers thought i was rude!!!
- By JaneG [gb] Date 05.05.06 12:18 UTC
If you don't want to see anyone then follow the usual good advice for a sore back. Lots of walking, either stand or lie down - try to sit as little as possible. Take anti-inflammatories and drink lots of water. remember bend your knees when lifting and try not to lift anything at an angle.

Take care,

Jane
- By michelled [gb] Date 05.05.06 12:20 UTC
cheers, maybe i will follow this & if it dosent get more better then see someone?
i have to go to the options next week, thats enough trauma for one week!!!!!

does devils claw work on backs?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 05.05.06 12:21 UTC

>i have to go to the options next week

Isn't that optional? ;) :D :D

(Sorry, couldn't resist ;))
- By michelled [gb] Date 05.05.06 12:41 UTC

i havent had mine done for about 6years....they want me to take in the old glasses...ive stuck the old lens on with tape & they are covered in dog hair:eek:
- By Val [gb] Date 05.05.06 12:54 UTC
That's a TRUE dog girl for ya!! :D
- By michelled [gb] Date 05.05.06 13:04 UTC
i thought the other week, "blimey my eyesight has got really bad" cos i couldnt read the Mway signs. then i found one of the lens had fallen out!!!
- By Carla Date 05.05.06 13:12 UTC
LOLOLOL :D
- By Carla Date 05.05.06 12:23 UTC
Probably, but it takes 2 weeks to get into the system to get an effect :)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 05.05.06 12:24 UTC
This site might help. :)
- By Tracey123 [gb] Date 05.05.06 12:41 UTC
I once had a rib out of place and that left me breathless with a bad back. My chiropracter put that back in for me.

Unlike you ChloeH I hate going to the chiro - I hate the feeling of the bones popping back in place!! My OH loves it too.
- By michelled [gb] Date 05.05.06 12:44 UTC
ohhh! did that happen suddenly?
- By Tracey123 [gb] Date 05.05.06 20:52 UTC
Yes it just popped out!
- By michelled [gb] Date 05.05.06 12:48 UTC
thanks JG,feel abit less worried now!
- By STARRYEYES Date 05.05.06 13:51 UTC
I have had a bad back for more years than I care to remember  .
You sound like you have strained something it usually happens with a slight movement rather than a  big one.
As previous posted said ibuprofen + paracetamol together 4 times a day continuously and a hot water bottle on your back when sitting helps with the pain if its no better by Monday I would then seek doctors advice.

a hot water bottle on your back

If it's inflammed to need Ibruprofen, then please use COLD compresses to reduce the inflammation, not a hot water bottle. :)
- By STARRYEYES Date 05.05.06 13:58 UTC
I have recently been to see my physiotherapist and was told that after the inital injury cold compress is important in the first instance but there after a hot water bottle is excellent for relief as it sends the blood flow back to the area.
- By Val [gb] Date 05.05.06 14:01 UTC
That would explain it. :)  I had a bad back for many years, which is why my daughter trained to be an Osteopath - she was fed up with helping me put my knickers on!! ;)  Since I've had the right information, I've had no problem since! :D
- By Val [gb] Date 05.05.06 15:29 UTC
Here's the professional reply!

" On muscle tightness - like after a day's gardening, heat will help to ease the tension but heat on something that's inflamed is like using bellows on an open fire - it dilates the blood vessels and opens the floodgates to the inflammatory mediators which are within our blood.  It might help ease your muscle spasm but you'll never get up from your chair half an hour later.... All the time the inflammation is there, it will be stiff as the muscles will go into a protective spasm around it.

You will never damage yourself with cold but if you put hot on the wrong thing, you will do more harm than good!"

Your Physio is right about sending the blood flow to the area!  Hope that helps. ;)

After suffering with bad backs too and having an almighty bad one at the mo. a cold compress is best!  I'm sat here all day in front of a computer and I'm in agony at the moment, can't even have the fan on as it aggravates my back even more:mad:
- By STARRYEYES Date 05.05.06 14:17 UTC
maybe you should try the hotty ;)
- By spanishwaterdog [gb] Date 05.05.06 15:21 UTC
I'd love to have a hotty, but I'm still looking for him :d
- By Val [gb] Date 05.05.06 15:31 UTC
When you find him, ask if he has an older brother!! ;)
Naaa not really I don't want a full time one! :D
- By michelled [gb] Date 05.05.06 15:51 UTC
i want one!
- By STARRYEYES Date 05.05.06 18:40 UTC
As I said cold at the initial injury there after.. heat.
This is how I have dealt with my back problems for years and years on the advice of my specialist  and physiotherapist.
For me personally this works perfectly.
I can walk after sitting down a lot better after I have had a hot water bottle resting on it and the heat eases the pain considerably for me.

Yes, I was told by my chiro not to use hot compresses as it causes any inflammation between the spinal thingys to get worse. I had to use ice packs...
- By LJS Date 05.05.06 19:34 UTC
I have had a very bad back since I was pregnant with Indigo :(

One thing I have learnt now is that the more I sit and do nothing because it hurts the worse it is :)

So I have increased what I do walking and other activities and have seen such a marked improvement

I used to pop the pills all the time but rarely have to now unless I have really over done it

The fitter you get and get the muscle tone up to support your back the better ;) I have a long way to go but I am so active now that I feel better in myself :)

That's really good, Lucy :) Particularly not having to take pills a lot - it's amazing how many people that have told me that they took more and more pain killers and then found that most of their symptoms were being caused by the pain killers. When they stopped the pills (with difficulty) most of their problems went :)

I,ve had a bad back this week but I,m almost sure its dog related could nearly put money on it
my two had next doors cat cornered and lying on its back hissing spitting and scratching , poor cat was stuck between two plantpots and couldn,t escape so I had to go to the rescue and yank my dogs away by the collars and as they both weigh thirty five kilos I,m sure thats what did it,
What did Ii get for saving the cats life a bad back and cat pee all over my feet.
- By bedruthen Date 05.05.06 20:16 UTC
I had a slipped disc near the top of my spine about a year after having my son. I can categorically say that the pain far exceded childbirth ( and that was a natural breech delivery - ouch!) When the doctor finally came out she asked me to get up off the floor at which point I passed out with pain. So yep it hurts
- By LJS Date 05.05.06 20:26 UTC
I was rattling at one stage and realised that I needed to do something to help myself as I wasn't going to be a back victim as I have so much to loose if I was ;)

Sometimes I crawl out of bed but is gets less the more I get fit

I think sometimes when you have a bad back you get very depressed as it is a miserable condition :(

I was not going to let it beat me :D
- By Carla Date 05.05.06 20:45 UTC
Yes, I agree. Mine relaxes with exercise.
- By MGR Date 05.05.06 22:38 UTC
What kind of exercise do you do that has improved your back pain?

I've been suffering back pain for many years too and I am in agony at the mo and on a lot of painkillers that dont work but only make me drowzy (sp) :-(, also went to see an osteopath 2day but no improvement yet.....

I have tried cardiovascular, yoga, pilates, physio, acupuncture and found them all just a temporary relief, but pain always comes back after a week or so...so,so annoying .....

- By STARRYEYES Date 06.05.06 00:49 UTC Edited 06.05.06 00:51 UTC
yes I agree wholeheartedly that sitting still or lying down aggrevates the condition I only take pain killers if I know I am going to be doing a lot of walking and physical work otherwise I just get on with it. ;)

I think to much intervention just aggrevates the condition after I have had physoi I am in agony for days  have you tried just leaving well alone and good posture helps.
- By Val [gb] Date 06.05.06 07:53 UTC
after I have had physoi I am in agony for days
That doesn't sound good at all! I would expect soreness for 24 hours and then relief until the next treatment.
- By STARRYEYES Date 06.05.06 07:58 UTC
Maybe I slightly exagerated not so much agony but discomfort no worries Val I go private and have one of the best Phy in Merseyside .
Still sticking with my hotty !
- By Val [gb] Date 06.05.06 09:19 UTC
I do worry STARRYEYES!  Don't like anyone to be in pain - I was myself for so many years! ;)
I'm glad that your hotty works for you. :D

PS  Wish you were nearer to Hertfordshire - I'd get her to see you FOC!! :)
