i have a giant breed who is due to whelp on tuesday 1st  mating we had her scanned at 29 days was pregnant she has very small enlargement if any nipples not that large or puffy but has gained around 2 stone 2lb does this mean we will have very small litter i even wondering if there any pups at all  as can't see were weight gain has gone she certainly dosen;t look as if she gained 5llb let alone any more what do you think i would be interseted in any opinions

My German Shepherd showed no enlarged teats at all you couldn,t even tell she was in whelp until seven and a half weeks into pregnancy she whelped six normal sized puppies and was a fantastic mother to them.
Try not to worry sometimes the puppies seem to drop more underneath the bitch and some bitches are very good at hiding their babies.
good luck let us know how you get on

I agree with spellmaker, don't be lulled into believing her size is anything to do with the number of pups your girl is having, they seem to hide all over the place these pups it is quite amazing how many can suddenly appear.

She has gained a good bit of weight there too, so look forward to the happy event. :-)

If she has gained about 2stone 2lbs, then this is a considerable amount surely even for a giant breed? Unless you have upped her food CONSIDERABLY I would think its a pretty clear indication she is in whelp. For a medium/large breed that sort of weight gain would be an almighty litter so surely for a giant breed that sort of weight gain is a decent size litter? Not sure why a small litter is being presumed?

Hi,

I am going through the same thing with my girl at the moment!  According to dates she was 7 weeks on Friday and her rib cage has really expanded but no other sign of puppies yet. I haven't scanned her by the way as I don't agree with how our vets scan so am relying purely on symptoms.  Her nipples have swollen a little, her vulva is very soft and still swollen, her coat is softer without loosing any coat, she has had morning sickness earlier on, been very fussy and picky with her food and has put on 6kg in weight without an increase in food.  Anyone that hasn't seen her for a few weeks definately notices that she is larger around her ribs.  She is becoming more and more restless with a return of appetite within the last 48 hours.  I just have to keep my fingers crossed and be very patient for the next two weeks but its so frustrating
