How on earth are you supposed to protect yourself from that? That's awful. I do hope he is going to be alright, and I'm so sorry for the theft of his dog.:(

What oh what is the world coming too

Sorry to add more news of stolen dogs, but a friend who is a vet has a lurcher. She was out in the Forest walking him, and was approached by 3 men who said "Hey, that's our dog," and tried to take him. Luckily the dog wouldnt let himself be grabbed, and she ran off with him.

My friend who lives in New Milton near the Forest was approached by a neighbour yesterday and told to keep a goood eye on her Flatcoat and Goldie; the previous day the lady's 18 month pet Goldie had been stolen. Her padlocked side gate had been forced, and the thieves had even broken into his kennel to get his lead, unbelievable

I have stopped putting up the lost, missing and stolen dogs for the time being as there are so many and I really did not feel we were doing any good. Basically if an adult dog appears in your area ask questions (or ask on this list and one of us will see if it fits the description of any missing dogs - but a good description is needed) or a pregnant Rottie bitch (or puppies) - I have her photo and can send it on to anyone but don't have any distinguishing features for her.

I know in the US, one of the "traditional" reasons of stealing dogs were to sell them to the different medical/scientific research labs and make a profit. :( :( Some institutions have changed their "policies" just to discourage this practise, while others don't seem to care.

I have no idea if this is one of the reasons why so many thieves are stealing dogs in the UK. I just can't really believe that only one "group"..... "Travellers" are this organized and widespread without the police doing anything about it??????

Pam with sighthounds its usually to breed longdogs/lurchers. Many owners of deerhounds, salukis etc won't give studs to lurcher/longdog breeders. Others (including yours truly) will, but only to people they know well and trust. And then of course, there is the matter of stud fees. Good running dogs also get stolen (and sometimes sold on) to be used in 'matches' where a lot of money is bet.

got more of the story now
the boy (yes boy) was aged 16 walking his PET SBT
4 afro carribean men jumped from a red fiesta and beat up the lad(apprently in a right mess) and took the dog.
Unfortunetly i fear he will have been taken for fighting and probably be dumped if he doesnt live upto it.
some people did try to chase the car but lost them.......
the police have been informed its the headline story on the local paper.
lets hope the catch the ....................

ill stop there as im getting angry

This is just terrible - how must that poor boy feel! 2 years ago I had 2 bitches stolen, in May 2000 a Black and Tan bitch was taken from her sleeping crate in my Dog room - the door was forced, and then in the August a Buff Bitch was stolen from a locked run when I went out for 10 minutes to buy the Sunday papers. Got Newspaper, magazine, radio and TV coverage for the thefts, and didnt get 1 single lead. Obviously have stepped up Security here in a big way (CCTV etc) since this happened, but I wonder every day how and where they are.

This is disgusting shows how little the dangerous dogs act did to stop dogfighting, is it usually staffies and bull terriers they try to nick cus they are the fighting breeds, does anyone ever get a German Shepherd or a Rottweiller stolen I mean what is the only way to ensure your dog doesn't get robbed to protection train him? I have had a couple of suspect people ask me about my dog but I talk and look confident and am quite big so I think they decide to leave it but it's awful that we have to go through this, until the government starts coming down on these criminals this will go on and on.

Any of you ever had one of the larger guarding breeds stolen from you?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 08.08.02 23:40 UTC
There is a small coach firm up the road from me. they had a German shepherd free to run in the yard, when they were shut. someone stole this 9 year old shepherd. People say they saw a young man with a white curly tailed dog leading him away! The owners suspect this must have been an in season bitch, as they don't see how else they would have got him! He wasn't vicious, but an efffective guard up to this point. this happened after 11pm, and it was people coming out of the pub nearby that saw the young man.

Haven't heard if they got him back!
- By Sharon McCrea [gb] Date 08.08.02 22:05 UTC
Gwen, can only imagine the worry of having a dog stolen. We had an attempted theft here years ago. At the time some of the deerhounds were kept in kennels at night, and I was woken up in the wee samll hours by the dogs fussing (husband was away of course). I went out and found a man in the kennel corridor with his mates parked down the road. At the time I had a wolfhound bitch who was (unusually for the breed) very protective of me, and when the bloke pushed me the bitch floored him (Thank God she didn't bite.) After that we got a bullmastiff. She was a real pet and total waste of space as a guard dog, but she looked the part and we hoped that would be enough to put would be thieves off. The only time the kennels are used now is when we have a litter or for the boys when the bitches are in season, but there is always the possibility that dog thieves will break into the house. Our bully died at a grand old age a couple of years ago, and we intended to get another bullmastiff puppy soon (we came to love the breed too), but now I'm wondering - if bull breeds are also being targetted, a bully might just be another "attraction" :-(.
- By NewfromLondon [gb] Date 08.08.02 23:37 UTC
I have Bullmastiff too, the show kennels have taken the protection instinct out of them, hopefulyl someone will make a concerted effort to bring it back in working Bullies! People look at them and think they are tough and can protect them so want to steal them. When I walk her now I feel like I am protecting her not the other way round.

That is terrible sharon :-(

Hi Gwen
I just read your post about having 2 of your dogs stolen :( I couldn't go on down the thread till I replied to say that it is awful and you have my deepest sympathy (I realise it was a while ago but you must think of it every day).
Nicky
- By gwen [gb] Date 10.08.02 14:24 UTC
Hi Nicky Thanks for the sympathy. It is something you can never, ever get over, just not knowing how and where they are. I still have the Mum, Daughter, and now grand-daughter of Colleen, and can see some of her in all of them, I know that Colleen, as long as she is fed and freasonable cared for will be happy - she is a lively, happy sort of dog, loving everyone she meets. But I still worry terribly about Dilly, she was shy, quiet and retiring. Very wary of strangers and not happy in unfamiliar situations, I just dont know how she will have coped.
Gwen
- By Sharon McCrea [gb] Date 08.08.02 22:08 UTC
And if the SBT had taken a lump out of the thieves, it would probably have run foul of the DDA and the owner prosecuted for damages. The world is going mad! Doesn't do any good, but please pass on good wishes, sympathy and anger to the boy.
- By pamela Reidie [gb] Date 08.08.02 22:31 UTC
Gwen that must have been awful for you. It is the not knowing what has happened to them..

Pam :-(
- By Lois_vp [gb] Date 09.08.02 07:06 UTC
I can't imagine anything worse than not knowing where or how your dogs are.
I heard of someone last year whose Afghan puppy was stolen from the garden - after months of desperate searching he was found on a gypsy site, very thin but unharmed. So that was one happy ending at least.
- By gwen [gb] Date 09.08.02 17:00 UTC
Thaks Pam & Sharon, yest it was (and still is) absolutely ghastly - I can just hope that they are being cared for, have given up all hope of getting them back. I can only be thankful that the 2nd thief carefully closed the gate so non of th e other dogs vanished!

How depressing...sad ..baskets..is that allowed Leigh.

Pamela
- By Leigh [gb] Date 11.08.02 10:06 UTC
Do I detect a note of sarcasm Pamela? :-)

Dog fighting is an awful 'sport' and maybe people would be surprised to find that those involved come from all walks of life. Not just those that you would assume would be involved :-(
- By pamela Reidie [gb] Date 11.08.02 19:51 UTC
No not sarcasm at all Some people don't even like names that suggest other names.. Ie swear words . I don't allow my child to use words changed to other things but I could not think of a word that was lesser that would be more suitable.

Parinoid Leigh ? :-) best left a that I think

Kerioak,

please do not stop adding missing/stolen/lost dogs to the Missing Dog Forum.
The missing dog forum is one of Champdogs busiest. People may not post (as it is an information forum, rather than debate) but it is certainly one of the most read :-)
- By Naomi [gb] Date 09.08.02 09:29 UTC
Thankfully our GSD is very vocal. He acts as a guard dog for our Mal as she would quite happily trot off with anyone who showed her a piece of cheese :(
I have heard that a lot of dog fights go on in our area and am sure that the 'wolf look' would be appealing to these idiots in their little 'games'
- By Lindsay Date 09.08.02 14:03 UTC
Regarding the guarding breeds getting stolen, there was a notice in a local dog club from an old lady.

A man jumped from a white van (why is it always a white van!) dressed in a smart suit.

He sprayed some thiing at her GSD, then grabbed it and shoved it in the van. The lady saw a litter of pups in the van and at least one other dog :( :(

She was too old and shocked to do anything as the bloke just drove off.

I have read of a GSD pup snatched whilst out on a walk, never seen again......

My heart just breaks for those who have lost their dogs in this manner, the wondering must be so very difficult to cope with. I would be totally distraught.

I have never forgotten the picture of a stolen pony from my teenage years in a horse mag; I recall the photo even now, of "Shandy". Stolen and believed sold for slaughter. Its the same sort of people, after kicks or money. I just hope they do eventually "get theirs...."

Thats aweful hearing about everyones losses :( you have my sympathy. Talking about mals being stolen, a week ago 5 mal puppies were stolen from a breeder, 2 days ago 3 of the pups were found, some idiot was trying to sell them off in the paper as Siberian Husky pups! no one has found the other 2 yet. Also a few months back i was out walking my mal Kodi and in the long grass on the side of the road i noticed a collar which had obvoiously been cut off was lying on the ground, i rang up the number on the collar and discoverd it was a husky that had been stolen, it still hasnt been recoverd. Latley there have been so many dog stolen for fighting around here, majority being the bull terriers and mals/huskys, i have resorted to keeping Kodi inside with me during the night and taking her to work with me during the day, you can never be too careful!
- By Kerioak Date 12.08.02 10:49 UTC
Okay Leigh

Will start again - strangely enough came across a reference to CD missing dogs forum yesterday when I was looking for something else on another site

I'm totally gobsmacked at the amount of dogs that seem to get stolen. I must be naive because I never realised this happened very often. I can't believe any true dog lover would willingly buy a stolen dog (or steal a dog) because they're bound to know how the real owner would be feeling. I must be thick but apart from wanting a dog for fighting I really wouldn't have thought there was much business in selling stolen dogs. I certainly wouldn't buy a dog from a stranger in a pub anyway!!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 13.08.02 18:14 UTC
Does make you wonder if they are used for breeding, and then pups sold without registration, as unregistered pups in some breeds command a good price.

the others I would think are stolen for a qucik buck for drugs, just like tha majority of opportunist burglary and car crime.

People in the country are often targets for the druggies, as they know the response time of the Police is slow in rural areas.

Dog fighting and using dogs for fighting bait is the worst case scenario.

I think a lot of the opportunist thieves think there is a lot of money in dogs, adn probably are surprised that they can't get as much as they thought for an adult without papers.
- By Julieann [gb] Date 14.08.02 10:52 UTC
I also heard that some dogs get stolen for ransom money to be paid anything from you own four legged friend who just like to plod around the park or the breeders dogs worth money. It's terrible what is this world coming to? :(

Julieann
- By tony.wilkinson [gb] Date 14.08.02 16:43 UTC
Good God. I sometimes get annoyed when I'm out with my 2 maremmas cos they won't let anyone come anywhere near us when out on a walk - particularly when it's quiet - without giving a little grumble - I've even had incidents of "lunging" when someone has started to run towards us when they were getting close.

I often think it would be so much easier with a "normal" breed of dog. We'll I've just changed my mind. I shudder to think what would happen to the men if they came at us but I'm certain they wouldn't get them into the car without being hurt.
- By Julieann [gb] Date 20.08.02 12:37 UTC
So sad that this happens.

Julieann :(
- By mr murphy [gb] Date 22.08.02 10:44 UTC
Dogs are stolen for a variety of reasons. Large dogs like rottys and mastifs can be bred and pups sold without papers for a couple of hundred quid each. The larger breeds can be used as bait to train fighting dogs. Running hounds can be used for breeding lurchers. pedigree papers mean nothing to the criminal fraternity. They can be forged. Stolen papers from one place can be used with a stolen dog from another. Get your dog tatood and chipped. Every vets surgery should check any dog coming in for a chip. This could uncover dogs stolen for breeding. The same as tatoo's.
