Depends on how sensitive your Boxer is etc.

Most Boxers are shown on a choke chain and then a nylon coloured lead
some may use leather leads etc.

The choke chains I use are 'diamond cut' or squashed link ones.
The chain should sit or lay on the shoulders.
Don't buy a chain that's too fine as your Boxer can snap them
the same goes with leads you don't want one too thick or too thin,
I can't find a ruler at mo to see how thick the ones I have are.
The lead should be one that you can fold up into your hand and
soft. A lot of people I know have bought the rope type nylon leads
and these burn or make your hands sore if the dog pulls.
I have both leather and nylon leads.
The nylon ones are good if you've got a chewer as they are cheap to replace
and you can wash them in the washing machine if they get dirty.
The leather ones tend to be softer but more expensive to replace if you've got a chewer.

I use a chain and leather lead (can't do nylon and have to have leather leads in the ring!) The chain ideally long enough to hang over the dogs shoulders when loosend.

If you can get to a show and watch the boxers that would be great and you can see the leads.

On a young puppy in training I use a flat slip lead (I use leather but again have loads lying around) I don't like using chains on  young puppy under 6 mths, normally wait untill they are 9-12 months.
