Topic Other Boards / Foo / any volunteers for a puzzle?
- By HuskyGal Date 02.05.06 10:50 UTC
If anyone's at a loose end, I need some guinnea pigs to solve this puzzle and tell me what you think of it..
Im writing training programmes at the moment (for an Airline) and thought this one would be pertinent.
Just wanting to know when your done.. is it too easy? too laborious? bit boring? how long did it take?
here it is:

>A group of explorers were deep in the Amazon jungle. Of the explorers, only Pablo could speak the native language.<

>The group met a native who asked Sven (another group member) a question in the native tounge, but Sven only understands Swedish.<

>In the group, there are people from many countries in Europe, all of which speak two or more languages, and they try to translate the natives question for Sven.<

>Pablo can speak only the native tounge and Potuguese.
>Anders, like Sven, can speak Swedish but also can comprehend Norwegian.
>Juan is tri-lingual and is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and French.<
>Umberto speaks only Italian and Dutch.

>Hans is from the Netherlands and is fluent in Dutch, German and English.
>Vladimir speaks Lithuanian and Russian.
>Nicole speaks French, German and Austrian.
>Peter can speak three languages: German, Danish and English.
>Jan used to work in the Russian embassy in Oslo and can speak both Norwegian and Russian.<
>Samantha speaks English and Austrian.
>Alan is fluent in both English and Swedish and can understand a little Lithuanian.<
>Isabel can speak French and Italian.<

How can the group translate the natives question into a Swedish so that Sven can understand?

Well it was easy but took a little time because of several people being involved, but not at all boring. :) Not sure how long it took -the time it took me to paint my nails, LOL! :D

great thanks!! have PM'ed answer to you to compare :D
- By CherylS Date 02.05.06 11:23 UTC
Easy, but then it depends upon those you are training. Very interesting, intrigued now :D
- By rachelsetters Date 02.05.06 11:38 UTC
reasonably easy - not too long - needed to concentrate without interruption!  No more than 5 mins I suppose!

A good one though!

Oooh Good
just wanted to trail run it, only found 2 ways of doing it so far...if anyone finds more???? let me know!!

Im using it for an Airline that wet leases out Passenger jets to other Airlines, so often the crew will be made up of different nationals (The 'customer' Airlines crew and Our crew as different countires aviation regulations differ) so it could be our Icelandic Pilots (but we have Aussies,Greeks,Scandanavians,Brits, Americans..blah,blah too) flying with Spanish cabin crew.
So I thought this little teamwork puzzle would be just right :D

have pm'd you my way as I came up with a different way to you - bit worried in case it's wrong but just double checked it! fingers and toes crossed please don't shame me on here if wrong!!

Don't they all speak English  :P

Seriously I thought all international Pilots spoke English
- By Isabel Date 02.05.06 12:38 UTC
Yes, but the cabin crew are not obliged to :)  With that many in the galley maybe just a few phrases might be helpfull like "får Deres albue ut av min øye"
- By HuskyGal Date 02.05.06 12:41 UTC
lol..... yes they must for CRM, and all our manuals etc are in English.
I was meaning the 'mix' of people was similar not the fact they dont all understand each other.
    however there are many missunderstandings.
Once when loading catering I asked a spanish colleague to 'cover my door' for me as I had to go to the cockpit, meaning my door is open stay by it to make sure caterers/cleaners/colleagues dont fall out while the truck reverses up.
In the flight deck I got an interphone call from crew at a midstation asking why Antonio was putting blankets over the doors...... :D

Tell me about it, even after 18 years in this country I STILL misunderstood my husband this morning and had to ask what on earth he meant!

Did anyone see Airport last night?  How not to conduct yourself in a customer services role.  I think it must be poor training as the staff don't seem to be able to empathise or give logical responses to disgruntled passengers (or non-passengers as it often turns out)

I thought it was quite easy and didn't take too long, so long as you had a bit of paper so you could remember where you were going!
