Topic Dog Boards / General / Neutering labrador advice please
- By Lauren [in] Date 02.05.06 12:17 UTC
Hi,

We have a very happy, bouncing 13 week old labrador puppy. When I last went to the vets for his last jabs at 10 weeks they said i should think about neutering for when he gets older. To be perfectly honest this is'nt something that I would want done unless absolutely necessary, there are no medical reasons at present for why he should be neutered, although i haven't made up my mind as at the moment he is too young to see how he will turn out. He isn't going to be a stud dog or showed and will always be accompanied.
I would just like your opinions on neutering for and against, does it affect temperament, humping frequency (he has tried a handful of times)? i have also read that it can affect the condition of their coat, he's is very soft at the moment, whether that is down to puppy fur or whether he will be blessed with that throughout his life remains to be seen. I have also read that it can increase appetit, how true this is I don't know.

Thanks for your help. Lauren

If you click on Search at the top of the page, then type in neutering or castration as your key words you'll get hundreds and hundreds of(at times heated!) posts!

It's your personal choice. :)

as Jeangenie says, there's thousands of posts on this topic. all i would add to her excellent advice is don't let your vet make your mind up for you. indeed, ignore any suggestion that your pup should be booked in for any date with castration destiny! only at the moment there seems to be a veterinary obsession with having the nuts off male dogs at what i consider a ludicrously early ages.

however, have a good read through previous discussions and mull over what's best for you and your dog.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies I will do a search for that. I wouldn't let my vet talk me into it unless he needed it for some medical problem he had. I just want to be abit informed so i can mull it over in the next few months. Thanks again, lauren.
