Hi all

Im new on here so would just like to say hello to everyone before I post my question, so hello!!

My question is this, I will be getting a puppy in about 4 weeks time and know I have to get him his second needle as the breeder gets his first one done, but I was talking to a girl who lives locally who has a new pup and she said when she took her pup to the vet (same vet I will be using) for his second needle the vet said he may as well give him 2 as it was only £5 cheaper for 1 and it would do the pup no harm having an extra injection. Is it ok for the dog to have the extra needle or should I just allow him to give my pup only 1 when I do take him.

Thanks
K

Hi K, it's common for vets to say things like that. What I would do, is find out from the breeder which manufacturer makes the vaccine she uses. Then ask your vet which they use and if it's not the same, find a vet that uses the same one. Then surely a singe second vax would be given.

Otherwise I'd tell your breeder what you have told us, and ask that they don't give the first one to your puppy because you are concerned, and rightly so, that the pup is getting too much vax.

Good Luck,

Dawn R.

Hi K - Dawn's advice is good, checking with the breeder is a wise move.
A lot of people assume that a vet wouldn't suggest something that wasn't in the pup's best interests but, sadly, this isn't always the case.  If you're not happy with his advice, don't go along with it.

This is the reason I don't part vaccinate my pups, they either leave unvacinated (if leaving by 10 weeks, or get both vaccinations, and won't leave me until after 10 weeks.

Hi there
Definitely check with your breeder and don't allow the vet to give an extra jab - you say it's only £5 extra but that could be the difference between life and death for your puppy - sorry to sound melodramatic, but I've just lost my 3 year old GR to over vaccination.  the more you research the more you realise the dangers!

I will also be getting my new puppy in 3 /4 weeks time and will only be giving him the puppy jabs and then titre test annually after that!

It depends on what the first injection is for, at what age it's given and which firm it's manufactured by. Contact your pup's breeder and get the details.

When I've had to part vaccinate my pups I've always told my n ew puppy owners to find a vet that vaccinates with the same one, so that they only have the second vaccination.  It's always worked out fine this way.  I would not want it repeating!

Thanks to everyone for your replies.  I am actually going to view the pups for the first time on Friday (get to choose 1:cool:) so i shall have a proper talk with the breeder....then again maybe i will email her beforehand and ask, that way i wont forget when im surrounded by georgeous pups.

Thanks again

Either that or write out a list of questions to ask, that's what I did! :-) I agree the puppy would be best with both injections or neither when he leaves the breeder, not just one.
