Topic Dog Boards / Health / Pocket of fluid in ear flap

Has anyone come across this?? Very odd. Never  seen it before.
My three year old bitch has a small pocket of fluid in her ear. I only noticed it when I was stroking her.
Like a little pillow! What is it? Any ideas?

It sounds like an aural haematoma, often caused by the dog scratching at an itchy ear - perhaps an ear infection? It'll need lancing to prevent a recurrence.

Ooooo yeuch. Vet tomorrow then. Poor Charmer. Ears clear though.
Perhaps she heard about John P on the news and couldn't believe her ears..................

Probably needs stitching as well, very tightly. My Golden had it happen last year, he ended up with 30 stitches in his ear which had to stay in for a full month -the longer the better the vet said, to stop it from recurring. (I had another Golden about 15 years ago who only had his lanced, and it does come back.) He looked awful for a while and the ear leaks a lot of gunk to start with but he's absolutely fine now. I did ask the vet if it had to be done, it wasn't really bothering him and he's old, but the vet said it would just grow bigger and could get really bad if left unattended.(The term "cauliflower ear" comes from untreated haematomas, when the ear shrivels up and thickens, but apparently if you're unlucky it can get so bad the ear can actually fall off.)  We left it for a few weeks to see and sure enough it doubled in size.

In older days they used to stitch buttons into the ear.

So sadly it's bound to mean surgery but it is only minor. :)

Friend's lab had this problem.  The vet put a drain in the ear for a week and then took it out and stitched up the wound.  Good luck with her!

My old boy had a few of these, as he wasnt being shown vet said leave alone and we did this and they just reabsorbed and he was left with a little bumpy effect on his ear but didnt need to go through any surgery and was fine. Depends how big / if you want to show etc
