Hi Everyone,

I finally got my new EBT puppy on saturday after what felt like ages of me waiting!!!

Hes settling in fine etc, but the only thing is his breeder fed him on pedigree chum and Iams! I personally think this is a poor food and would like to change him over to JWB/nature diet asap, his breath is smelly, and does alot of poos! If he is eating poorer food, does that mean he will poo more? Im sure that when my older dog was a pup, he never pooed as much as he did! Any opinions on this? How long do you think i should wait until i change him to JWB? A couple of weeks maybe?

Any info/help will be appreciated!

I know people say to wait a couple of weeks,but if it were my pup i just couldnt stand the thought of feeding him iams and pedigree so i would change his food straight away! Yes,the poorer the food the more they poo,if a food is full of undigestable fillers and mostly grain fractions then its going to come out the other end mostly unchanged and poorly digested. Good food equals smallish,firm poops

Wait until he's settled in your home and happy so under no stress, then you have to make the switch gradually by adding a small amount of the new food into each meal and then over a period of time increasing the new food and decreasing the old until there is only new, otherwise you will get most likely get an upset stomach.

Not wanting to kidnap this thread, but also wary of adding another similar one.... 

My RR pup is fed Purina Beta Puppy (Large Breed) as this is what he had at the breeders.  He does like this food, but it seems to me that he is also doing rather a lot of poos throughout the day.  They are not at all runny, but I believe they are also not as firm as they could be. 

With the bewildering array of complete foods out there, and my worry of making sure he gets all the nutrients he needs as he is growing so fast - does anyone have a recommendation for another complete food to change to?

Depends what you mean by a lot of poos.  There should be as many poos as there are meals if the digestion is working properly which of course can mean several with puppies.  There is nothing "poor" about these foods, many feed them with great success but not every food will suit an individual.  I would say though that I have had much better success with combating any anal gland problems by not feeding anything that produced small firm stools, large bulky stools are what is needed to push against the glands as they are outside the anus.
If you are going to change I would definately leave it a couple of weeks.

I agree with you Engbull03 - Pedigree and Iams wouldn't be my choice of foods either, and JWB and ND are good choices.  Did the breeder give you a bit of Pedigree and Iams to keep you going?  I would finish that off before you change over.  Yes, in my experience, poor quality foods which have a lot of fillers do tend to create more poos.

while I agree with your choices of food, it's possible that changing homes and diffrerent water has made his tum a little unsettled ;)  
Some people use a little Bio Yoghurt to aid with tummy upsets, about a teaspoonful with a meal for a little pup as long as he isn't milk intolerant.

My little boy had Nutro at his breeders for a couple of weeks then she moved him on to tripe and biscuit and milk (rice pudding) feeds (two of each, alternated).  I haev some Nutro in as I'd bought it when I knew she was feeding him that and I occasionally give him a portion of that first thing in the morning if I haven't soaked the biscuit or got raw mince meat in the house.  He loves it, and he does nice pick-up-able poos on it.  I may well change to that after the twelve week period is over and I start reducing his feeds bit by bit.  It is a highly regarded food - my breeder would really not have given them anything less than the best - it is a bit pricey though compared to some brands.

One of my dogs was fed on a poor but popular dog food when she came to live with me,her poops were large and bulky,but she also  had anal gland problems,she was at the vets apparantly every 3 months to have them expressed! I changed onto a better food and voila she hasnt needed her butt squeezed since,and her poops are small,but solid :)

Minny minsk,i feed berrimans,it has worked great for my dogs,it is a natural food without all the nasty preservatives,fillers and such,plus the puppy version has 40% chicken meal as its first ingredient.I dont have any puppies but i have always fed the puppy version as its better than the adult one.

Just want to confirm that our puppy was fed Hills Science Plan and pooed a lot (little bits everywhere 6-8) thanks to CD good advice she has been on JWB for a few weeks and now she only poos after her meals (3 times a day)
