- By susantwenty? [gb] Date 30.04.06 19:55 UTC
Hi guys, how often do use bath your dogs all mine have been bathed today and i have to say they love plus they get their beds washed once a week! how often do you do yours?
- By mygirl [gb] Date 30.04.06 20:00 UTC
My oldest was bathed twice shes 3, the middle bathed once hes 2 and the baby never.

I dont do it as a rule unless they have rolled in something a bit iffy or in summer they may get a hose down.
But you try getting a 13stone dog in the bath it aint pretty (and generally takes more than two people) :D :D
I like to think regular daily brushing avoids the need for baths (well it has in our case) :D
- By Lara Date 30.04.06 20:00 UTC
About twice a year.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 30.04.06 20:02 UTC
Piglet (not a show dog) had his only bath when he was 5. He'll be 7 in August. The others used to get bathed before a show, but now they're retired they don't get bathed. :)
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 30.04.06 20:18 UTC
I've never bathed my cockers but a friend insisted bathing my springer when he visited once and was dirty!  I hose them down when they've rolled but can't understand the need to bring them into the house for a wash!
- By ponk [gb] Date 30.04.06 20:33 UTC
I bath mine every two to three weeks, and get this.........I wash their dog beds everyday!
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 30.04.06 21:40 UTC
I also do mine very rarely like others if they've rolled into something not nice smelling :d  Or a few days before a show but seeing as I don't show much again it's hardly ever.
- By roz [gb] Date 30.04.06 23:35 UTC
nips has been bathed twice in the 9 months of his life. both times only because he had rolled in something so appalling that he wasn't fit for his own company, let alone anyone elses. the second occasion being while we were at my horrifyingly houseproud sister in law's house where i had to bath him on the patio (in december!) while she stood at arms length wearing a full chemical protection suit handing me warm water.

(actually i may have exaggerated a little. i suspect she just wanted to be wearing the suit) ;)

but seriously, there's absolutely no way he gets regular baths. they aren't necessary and aren't good for a short-coated terrier with attitude!
- By stann [gb] Date 30.04.06 23:43 UTC
Every time he rolls in something gross  New bedding daily which is probably why he has had 8 beds since we brought him home a year ago as i wash and tumbledry them and you are not supposed to lol.
- By Ktee [us] Date 01.05.06 01:23 UTC
Mine get an indoor warm bath every 3-4 weeks,i could NEVER hose them down in the back garden with freeezing cold water, they would hate me forever!  I wash their bedding once a week.
- By Lara Date 01.05.06 06:51 UTC
I don't bring mine indoors to wash them - they go to the dog wash at the garage.  It's a mini jet wash next to the car wash.  Gets them lovely and clean :)
- By Minny_Minsk [gb] Date 01.05.06 07:48 UTC
Earl's had one bath in his 12 weeks of life - and from the sad face it caused, I suspect his next one will only be when the stench from him becomes visible :-)

I wash his bedding every other day, but I'm a sucker for punishment.....
- By Daisy [gb] Date 01.05.06 08:26 UTC Edited 01.05.06 08:36 UTC
Can't remember when Bramble had a bath last. He's probably only had two in the seven years that we've had him. Tara had a few when she was a puppy, but only has them now if she has rolled in something which the garden hose can't sort :D So probably just one or two in three years :)

Whenever I have bought a puppy I have bathed it on returning home with it, but of the dogs I've got now, both were bathed when i bought them and JRT will be done in the bath once a year and my RottiexGSD done with the hose once a year on a nice hot day.
Bedding done weekly.
- By supervizsla Date 01.05.06 08:35 UTC
oh doesn;'t that get rid of the puppy smell. mmmmmmmmm i love that smell :D
- By morgan [gb] Date 01.05.06 08:56 UTC
bathed mine at 1 year, after 2 days he smelt like a dog again so never bothered again. luckily he doesnt roll in stuff:cool:
- By loanerwhelk [gb] Date 01.05.06 09:11 UTC
Well, it depends on whether you include a shoulder down shower off in the bath, technically a "bath".  I'm sure no one has told Rosie she's a dog, because she has the habit of pulling me up stairs to our en-suite and jumping in the bath herself every time we go for a muddy walk:cool: (She's an english setter - orange belton) so she truly looks hideous if it's wet and muddy and just won't dry off in the kitchen without help! These days it is not quite so necessary but she is so funny. She is even unwilling to settle for her breakfast unless she's clean!!!  I guess I'm quite lucky though, she's not one for finding disgusting things to roll in. Otherwise she has a professional wash and brush up every two months.
- By supervizsla Date 01.05.06 09:14 UTC
i have to bath my mongrel about once a week  due to her being a PAT dog and it is one of their conditions taht your dog is clean before visiting.
otherwise they only get bathed if they roll in something discutsting.
- By Harley Date 01.05.06 11:35 UTC
Snap - Harley automatically walks into the shower when we return from a walk. He is a mud magnet so is showered off regularly but only with water, no shampoo. The odd time that he has come home clean he still walks into the shower and looks quite confused that you haven't turned the water on!
Whoops this has come up in the wrong place.
- By Muttsinbrum [gb] Date 01.05.06 09:14 UTC
Very rarely- neither are 'rollers' although both delight in tromping through mud but usually a daily brushing gets that out - eventually... They do get a more or less weekly 'wipe over with an oily rag' i.e. a good rub with an absorbant cloth dipped in a very weak solution of shampoo and then rinsed off with another cloth.   This keeps them shiny and clean but still doggy.  The staircarpet/rugs are another matter entirely...still, it's better than going to the gym (I tell myself).

Regards, Linda
- By SharonM Date 01.05.06 09:25 UTC
My dogs are bathed once a month - except Lily, she's bathed probably twice a month, being B&W and a mud magnet - bedding is also washed DAILY!
- By bevb [gb] Date 01.05.06 10:27 UTC
Yes which is why I do it I can't be smelling that all day
- By Steeleye Span [gb] Date 01.05.06 09:46 UTC
The Gruesome Twosome were bathed by their breeder on the morning they came home (smelled like human babies)...Haven't been bathed since...They are however, regularly flannelled and towelled when they get grubby or wet...They are also groomed daily.
- By RHODAP [in] Date 01.05.06 09:51 UTC
We bath ours before each flea treatment is applied, approx. 3 monthly.
- By spellmaker [gb] Date 01.05.06 13:04 UTC
I rarely bath mine usually a good wash down wuth a chamios leather gets rid of the top mud and the rest brushes out quite easily when theyv,e finished a season they will get a shampoo wash on their back ends before being allowed back into society.
They keep remarkably clean as we live in iron ore country and even if they come home covered in the red stuff it doesn,t take more than ten minutes to get them clean, but then it takes a good half hour to get me clean:rolleyes:
I check their ears every day and give them a clean out with baby lotion or whichazel if needs be and use toothpaste on a bit of rag to do their teeth.
- By huskypup [gb] Date 01.05.06 13:54 UTC
Mine gets a shower twice a year and her legs and undercarriage get rinsed when she gets really muddy - often.  It is too traumatic for me to bath her more frequently, the whining and crying that goes on - and that's just me!  :D Plus it takes 24 hours to get her fully dried off - even when I can get her to stand still long enough for the hairdryer to have any effect whatsoever :)
- By Steeleye Span [gb] Date 01.05.06 21:04 UTC
  Trust me to tempt fate!  Veda managed to skid headlong into the world's largest and sloppiest cow pat this evening.  He became a tricolour BC instead of being his usual black & white.  Not content with covering himself from head to tail in yukky cow poo , he decided to rough and tumble with his sister , so Tara too became rather messy and pongy...

  Nothing for it but to succumb to giving them both a bath...Now the Gruesome Twosome smell fresh and fragrant  and the bathroom and longsuffering owners smell like an ol' farmyard!!!  ;)
- By Goldmali Date 01.05.06 13:58 UTC
So much depends on breed and coat! My Malinois can look perfectly clean for months, and in fact I only bath them before champ.shows or when in moult. The Goldens, Cavalier and Papillon will get VERY dirty when it is wet outside and need much more frequent baths to not stink. :)

Wish I could wash their beds once a week but washing my dog beds takes 3 hours each time. (As in 3 hours hard work scrubbing them in the bath!)
- By Teri Date 01.05.06 14:38 UTC
If mine get 3 baths in their life time they're doing well :)  Strips the natural oils from the coat and softens the texture (in my breed at any rate).

IME regular grooming keeps their coats in healthy, clean, smell free condition - unless they get to their fox friends - then they may get one of those rare baths :P

regards, Teri
- By LucyD [gb] Date 01.05.06 16:43 UTC
Henry every other week as he's usually going to a show - don't know how I'd keep him clean without such frequent baths! Ellie about once a month or two when she's going to a show. George once in a blue moon - last bath December, next one in a week or two as he's doing a companion show and his fur is so greasy I can't clip it properly! In between shows they get their feet rinsed if particularly muddy, and a hosepipe in the back garden if they've rolled in anything!
- By pinklilies Date 02.05.06 00:04 UTC
HI
I have 2 afghans....Delilah gets a bath and blow dry once a fortnight. Zorro has a difficult adolescent coat and he needs a bath weekly. If they get left any longer they get really tangled. I also wash all their bedding once a week. :)
- By Jetstone Jewel [ca] Date 02.05.06 00:28 UTC
Like many other posters, as infrequently as possible.  That said, baths tend to come in groups of two or three close together as bathing seems to be related in direct proportion to the likelihood of finding something stinky to roll in.
- By peewee [gb] Date 02.05.06 14:41 UTC
Never bathed our current Sheltie girl but have only had her for 4 months.  Haven't washed her proper bedding yet (not that she uses it much like cos she sleeps on mine for most of the night :D ) but have washed the towels a few times - very frequently when we first got her cos of 'accidents' and then she had a really bad tummy bug bless her.  We had to 'shampoo' her back end several times a day for a week when she had the bug but apart from wiping her down with a towel and cleaning her paws when muddy thats it :)  Previous 2 Shelties maybe had 2 baths a year - its just a case of 'when they need a head to toe scrub' with us
- By shadbolts [gb] Date 02.05.06 14:57 UTC
Our Golden gets regular showers from the hose pipe and has had about 4 baths (she's 14 months).  She has this nasty habit of laying down in muddy puddles which result in the frequent hose pipe showers, she also occaisionally will roll in a cow pat - hence the baths.
- By earl [gb] Date 02.05.06 15:53 UTC
My poor little Roxy gets bathed every week or two, but she does sleep in bed with us and I don't want a dirty doggy sharing my pillow!

Unfortunately she hates every minute of it.  I can't understand why she's not used to it yet as she's been getting regularly washed and blow dried (god I feel like such a cruel person) since she was a baby and she's now nearly two and a half.
- By CherylS Date 02.05.06 16:13 UTC
As needs be...... like tomorrow seeing that she whiffs horrible following rolling in something yesterday

Generally about every 6ish weeks but it's not unknown for her to have 2 baths in one week because she likes jumping in stinking ponds and rolling in I don't know what.

If she is just muddy she might get the hose on affected parts depending on how muddy she is
- By nuttyhousewife [gb] Date 02.05.06 19:24 UTC
i bath mine before a show and i was there bedding everyday
- By Lori Date 02.05.06 19:47 UTC
About once a month he hops in the shower (you've seen that ad haven't you). That's about how long my mud monster goes before he turns into a grey retriever instead of a richly golden one.
- By Annabella [gb] Date 02.05.06 20:48 UTC
Only when they have rolled in dead fish ect or poo.

Sheila.
- By munkeemojo Date 02.05.06 20:54 UTC
mine only get a bath if they're really really pitted, have rolled in something they shouldn't, or feel really dirty when stoked. My youngest has only had two baths, and he's just over a year old.
- By Ktee [us] Date 02.05.06 22:36 UTC
Those of you that wash bedding everyday, can i ask why you have to wash it each day?

I have heard so many times that owners never wash their dogs,i wonder how they deal with the stink when they roll in something,or swim in a stanky puddle or just get dirty and itchy? My dogs sleep in my bed with me too,and the thought of a *dirty* hairy creature sleeping on my clean sheets is off  They also have access to all the furniture,i would think if they didnt get bathed, everything in my house would soon smell doggified... I must admit a *stinky dog* house is one thing i cant stand, people can have dogs and still have a fresh smelling house, which IME takes vigilant grooming and regular baths???
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 03.05.06 06:44 UTC

>i wonder how they deal with the stink when they roll in something,or swim in a stanky puddle or just get dirty and itchy?

Tomato ketchup rubbed into a stinky area from where they've rolled, and then spot-washed off, does a good job. Muddy feet can be washed in a bucket - other than that a good brushing (which of course they get every day) removes any other mud when it's dried - just like with a horse. :) It also helps to have a breed not renowned for smelling 'doggy'. :)
- By CherylS Date 03.05.06 07:42 UTC

>It also helps to have a breed not renowned for smelling 'doggy'

.....or foxy :D  I was shouting across the meadow "NOOOO" in strained tones and OH said she's just playing.  I told him he didn't understand but I could tell she thought she'd found doggy version of Chanel No. 5.  Weird thing is I can't actually tell where on her body the smell is coming from, she just leaves an aroma lingering in the air .... much like Chanel No. 5. :D
- By roz [gb] Date 03.05.06 11:05 UTC
ah yes "foxy"! we know "foxy"!! in fact i'm surprised that the hunt don't regularly turn up on my front doorstep baying for action given that nips's sole ambition is to coat himself as thoroughly as possible in fox by-products.

as for dogs in beds i'm one of those kill-joys who don't want to share their pillows and bedclothes with a dog. nice large warm kitchens, in my opinion, being where dogs sleep in my house! however, he's allowed to sleep (as he is now) curled up like a cat on a towel on the duvet cover in the day if i'm on the computer - i need to be kept a close eye on, you see - but overnight, no way! my bed is a dog-free zone so there's not a chance that i'll ever give him unecessary baths in order to get him up to boudoir standards!

as for bedding, he has a large furry doggy blanket which he hates being washed since it then doesn't smell right. and being a positive slattern, i'm happy to go along with his wishes!

"I have heard so many times that owners never wash their dogs,i wonder how they deal with the stink when they roll in something,or swim in a stanky puddle or just get dirty and itchy?"

We've not had a dog who rolled in anything untoward and as we don't walk 'out in the country' our current girl would have a job finding cow pat to 'play in' ;)  Our previous dogs hated getting wet so would avoid even the tiniest of puddles like the plague.  Our current dog hasn't been let off lead yet so can be 'guided' round any puddles that we see   As for getting "dirty and itchy" we've never had that problem as regular grooming, washing of paws, towelling down after being out in the wet/rain works fine for 'our breed' in the location we live and walk :)

"My dogs sleep in my bed with me too,and the thought of a *dirty* hairy creature sleeping on my clean sheets is off eek They also have access to all the furniture,i would think if they didnt get bathed, everything in my house would soon smell doggified"

Our dogs have always been allowed on the furniture and slept on beds but again dirtiness isn't a problem we've had.  Yes a non-pet owner can tell when entering a house that has animals but our house doesn't smell "doggified" because 'our breed' doesn't have a particularly doggy smell

"I must admit a *stinky dog* house is one thing i cant stand, people can have dogs and still have a fresh smelling house"

I agree with that statment but IME it depends on a) the number of dogs in the house b) what breed they are c) where they are exercised d) how regularly they are groomed and e) how often the house is 'aired' cos any house can get a bit stinky if the windows are never left open for a couple of hours!

:)

My cocker was a wash, cut, blow dry and nail clip every 7 weeks.  :)
