Hi guys:cool: what's involved when you import a dog? how long are they quarinteened for? what's the cost of importing? what do you do regarding the kennel club registration?

If anyone has imported how does the dog turn out if it's been quarinteened for a couple of months? do they have behavioural problems? is it hard to bond with them? what if you purchase the dog and it then has problems how do you then sort this out with the breeder if their in another country?

Sorry for all the questions:cool: cheers Susan

Regards Susan

1.6 months unless they have a pet passport
2.Cost depends on the kennels you use
3.You can apply for KC registration the day the 6 months is up using the KC docs from the country of orgin
4.Behaviour Depends on the quality of the kennel staff & the temperament & character of the dog & can also depend on the age of the dog
5.Never had any problem as our imports(both as 13 week old puppies)had no problems at all

My first SWD sailed through quarantine and she was exactly 12 months old on the day when we imported her :d  The other older ones were fine too.  The youngest who was 7 months didn't cope well at all and hated to be near kennels or anything that looked like one after that.  Until he eventually went into a family home his temperament wasn't great but when he did eventually go to one he was a changed dog and they had a number of wonderful years with him.

Dilita just walked straight out of quarantine into her new life as though she'd been with us forever, but there again she was something special I've not seen any yet with her character!

Our boy came out of quarantine at 8 1/2 months and went to his first show 3 days later.  Hew wnted to be freidns with every human and canine, and the only thing he disliked was the car.

He went through Meg Purnel Carpenter's Quarantine kennels.  He was visited by me 2 oir 3 times a weeka dn by his other woners once a week or when they could (they lived much further away).

I used to take a wind up radio with me set to al sorts of stations.  The main negative that stayed with him is barking, as that would have been a main amusement.

Thanks guys, my main concern was behavioural problems but due to your answers i gather you can visit your dog in quarantine?

It was a long time ago Susan, in 1990, and then the quarantine cost was around £1800 (Golden Retriever, they did go on size for charges) -that is not including the shipping etc.

In 2002 it cost us £2500 in import and Quarantine costs (not including his purchase price).

You get charged Tax on the Value of the dog when you import it, regardless of what you paid for it (we got charged £200) also the Quarantine and handling charges at Heathrow, and to the kennels were about the same.  It all adds up.

The actual quarantine will cost about the same as daily boarding, plus the extra fees for vaccinations vetting etc.
