Out walking my JRT this morning in a built up area and he suddenly dived on something and stuffed it in his mouth. I tried to prize open his mouth as he picks everything up, edible and non edible, and he had a dead featherless baby bird in his mouth, trying to swallow it fast before I could get it. It was a very big baby bird so would have thought it was a rooks or magpies or similar. He quickly crunched his teeth down before I could get his mouth properly open and shake it out and all blood and bits appeared at the side of his mouth which he somehow managed to devour instantly and then i stood helplessly watching the little legs and feet dissapear from view. lots of people were walking by looking.
I was just praying he wasn't going to chuck it up on my carpet when we got home, but luckily so far it hasn't made an appearence.
Don't you just love em

LOL My malamutes are always managing to pick up the most revolting dead things and eat them :D

mine actually catch mice fairly regularly in the field I exercise them in and eat them - great sighthounds - mighty hunters..lol. They'll also catch and eat rabbits and once a hare. They'll also polish off any remains, preferably rotten, that they find and wash it all down with copious amounts of sheep poo - and never get upset tummies?!

Yep been there :D
Nice group of people on the path in the park at a crossroads and my dearly departed Tula wanders out from the bushes scoffing something whose tail hung out her mouth (I suspect young squirrel). C4runch crunch she went, as I had obviously called her half way through her meal :D

Late for work and in an awful rush for a very busy day, youngest son called me to say that youngest cocker had a bird in his mouth. I forced him out onto the patio and he sat there with two birds feet sticking out the side of his mouth, with a very proud look on his face. I took hold of the feet (which were still warm), gave him the command to leave, and took the bird from him.
Not knowing what to do with it, (and being in a rush) I decided to throw the poor thing over the fence into our end part of the garden to deal with later. I was so shocked when mid fling, the birdie flew away! He went to sit in a tree looking damp and dishevelled but OK. Shocked too no doubt.
At least nobody can accuse my dog of having a 'hard mouth'!

The cocker we had when I was a small child retrieved my brothers' hamster many times - always unharmed, although somewhat damp around the edges.

I've learned from past experience that an overly-hastily devoured rabbit will undoubtedly reappear at the most unfortunate and publicly humiliating moment possible.

... in exactly the same way as hot stolen BBQ sausages do!

I was talking to a lady once who had two Golden Retrievers. Because they lived with cats, one of the dogs actually leapt up and took a sparrow in mid flight. She then swallowed the bird whole. Luckily a few minutes later she regurgitated it. The lady took the bird to the Vets, it was kept in over night and flew away the next day.

my old cocker was determined to get up close and personal to next door's chickens. and finally he was rewarded when she let them out and a large fat hen sauntered into the garden at the precise moment bob had gone out for a dump. a lot of barking and squawking alerted me and i tore outside to discover him sitting there with a look of blissful stupidity on his face and this blasted hen in his mouth. my heart sank at the thought of confession times to come but bob hadn't actually got a clue what to do with the hen so finally dropped it. whereupon it got up, gave him the most baleful look and waddled back home turning round once to give him another drop dead look.
but of horrible regurgitated wildlife, nips went up to the barn with his litter brother and half sister last month and within half an hour of coming home brought back something so evil on the carpet that even he refused to look at it. litter brother was ok, it turned out but half sister gave her owners a similar "present" and it turns out they'd had a very, very, very dead rabbit and half a flippin' dead pigeon for afters. jrts, dontcha just love the little scavengers!

Yesterday I found my Beattie plucking one of next door's new chickens which had decided to explore our garden. Although the lawn looks like someone's been having a pillowfight the bird was uninjured (just a tad more oven-ready! :D) and stalked off okay when chucked back over the fence. Luckily our neighbours are very reasonable and agree that if the birds are stupid enough to trespass they get what they deserve!

My grandmother had a setter (not sure what sort) - it came in from the garden one day and sat next to her with it's head on her lap - after a while it opened it's mouth and a mouse ran out

:D

What is it about dogs that means we can see them roll in something dead one second and be hugging and kissing them the next?

erm....actually i don't and can't! i need a decent amount of time between the two activities! the precise amount being determined by the disgustingness of the first activity! ;)
