Topic Dog Boards / General / Does your dog have strange habits...?
- By louisechris1 [gb] Date 27.04.06 08:41 UTC
Just wondering if anyone out there have dogs that do strange things?  We have a RR rescue who will insist on stopping several times in the woods for a tasty snack of leaves from a ground cover plant.  We put this down to her perhaps eating these leaves when she was living rough before being picked up by the dog warden.  If so though, why does she still eat them !!!! :D

Floyd cleans himself like a cat  He will go paddling in the most manky stinky rank and disgusting pool of water, and then be clean after half an hour, systematically washing himself just like a cat. I don't know if this is normal for a dog, or if its a working dog thing (don't 'spect the shepherd gives the collies a wash after a days work ... ) but it is really sweet to watch.

She is so cute!

Jack is a pick pocket....
- By Emz77 [gb] Date 27.04.06 13:37 UTC
So is my dobe polo, he once stole my mobile out of my pocket and took it to the garden , took me ages to find out where the ringing was coming from as I hadn't been in the garden
- By Dogz Date 27.04.06 15:29 UTC
Oops! nothing so serious yet...plenty of tissues and poo bags have gone that way though:eek:
- By Emz77 [gb] Date 27.04.06 12:58 UTC
Not my dog, but my boys sire! He sucks his side like a sort of comfort thing! when curled in a ball to sleep, it is really cute seeing a big Dobe being sopey like that :-D
- By Harley Date 27.04.06 13:14 UTC
Harley  lies on his back and holds his toys in his paws above his head as if inspecting them. He will lie like this for ages.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 28.04.06 13:07 UTC
This is a very common trait in dobes and can be quite a worry as soem do it so much they end up with no hair, or skin problems.

re. a tasty snack of leaves  Our girl has a favourite grass she likes to snack on.  It is quite tough, with long stems that are rough on the edges and it cuts me if I walk through it in bare legs.  Doesn't seem to cut her tongue though.  On nearly every walk she asks if I will stop and wait while she has a chew.

My Dobe Ciara has a raw bone most days and she has a few wierd rituals around bone time.  When I put it down for her, I usually go straight back into the kitchen to wipe the surface where after a couple of seconds of licking the bone Ciara will come and find me looking pleased as punch and wiggling her little stump.  She becomes very cuddley and spends about 5 mins going between licking the bone for a few seconds and then coming back to me for kisses (lovely with bone breath) and cuddles whilst looking at the bone.  After about 5 mins of this she will settle down to have a good old munch on the bone and when she's spent a little while cleaning the bone up (thank goodness) she then likes to put it on my knee or my foot, or right by me to finish chewing it.  Bless the little loon that she is :-).

Dudley has her 'Pudley paw' This is her right paw that she comes up sticks out infront of her and then does a big stretch :D

She also does this standing at the bottom of the stairs when somebody is coming down :D

We use an old trowel to pick up poo in the garden and when Alfie sees us picking up  and disposing of the poo he goes crazy:eek: He attacks our feet and jumps up our legs until we have put the trowel down!:)
- By ShaynLola Date 27.04.06 17:41 UTC
Shay won't poo in public.....ever!!! Not even in our own garden  He has to go into the thickest clump of bushes he can find, totally out of sight where he will 'perform' (which makes picking up after him nigh on impossible a lot of the time). If we are out somewhere that doesn't have anywhere suitable for him to have total privacy, he will find the next best place and wait for us to turn our backs  Sometimes, there will be several 'false starts' as he checks out a location, sniffs, circles, crouches....and then realises that someone can see him so off he goes in search of somewhere more private. Bizarre

My 10month old Rottie x GSD still won't wee and poo on a walk, she will hang on and on till we get home and then rush for the garden with a huge sigh of relief.
- By Emz77 [gb] Date 28.04.06 06:46 UTC
my old GSD (bitch) used to do the exact same thing Bev, it used to amaze my family when they came round after being out for 2 hours then crossing her legs and busting a gut to get to the back door and outside lol. They are lovely though aren't they :-D
- By kizzy68 [gb] Date 28.04.06 07:13 UTC
My 11 month old GSD Kody removes his bedding out of his bed first thing every morning and lays it on the lawn then goes indoors waits for my Kizzy the eldest one to wake up then takes her bedding out and lays it next to his..he doesnt lay on it or anything...I am sure he is just airing it !!! cant help laughing
- By jazzywoo Date 28.04.06 11:43 UTC
Jazz has many strange habits :D.  If a human sneezes Jazz has to mimic them.  He will not greet you when you come in unless he has a teddy in his mouth and can sing better that way.  He also like to sleep withh all 4 paws in the air with his favourite teddy on his chest.  The funniest one for me is if he sneaks on our bed for a nap he only ever uses his dads pillow :D :D.
- By ChinaBlue [gb] Date 28.04.06 11:57 UTC
One of our dogs sucks her duvet, one of my GSD's 'hugs' my garden spade and whimpers every time I try and use it:rolleyes: oh, and also attacks the wheelbarrow wheel when I'm trying to push it - boy gardening can be tiring at times

OK, it has to be the fault of this post! I had a normal dog until I read this. Next day I see him plunge his head in the water bowl and start blowing bubbles. Where on earth did that come from. It's his favourite game now.
- By supervizsla Date 30.04.06 14:34 UTC
mine did that for a while untill i reallised there was a mark att the bottom of her water bowl and once cleaned she stopped doing her bubble blowing :D
- By Lori Date 30.04.06 17:10 UTC
Unfortunately every time mister, see it, examine it with my mouth, sticks his face in his bowl there are new objects to attract his attention. The stuff he can carry around in there! :-D
- By roz [gb] Date 30.04.06 18:34 UTC
nips is a pick pocket too. specialises in nice clean linen hankies which then have to be thoroughly "seen off". his other nightly habit is his insistence on having the orange peel (and scraping the last solitary remains from it) when the oh has his after-dinner orange. in fact the oh has to have an after-dinner orange whether or not he wants one because otherwise nips will stand, quivering and moaning in front of the fruit bowl.
- By newfiedreams Date 30.04.06 18:58 UTC
No...but I do!!! Does that count???? :D :D :D
- By Tricolours [gb] Date 30.04.06 23:13 UTC
My two dogs lick my OH feet when he gets in from work, they have one foot each and if he doesnt take his socks off quick enough they try to chew his socks until he does take them off.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 30.04.06 23:23 UTC
Anton has to poo in bushes :d  Doesn't help to pick it up if there are nettles etc. there.  He also comes to sit on my knee and puts his legs on the side of me.  Oh, he also lies down with me, puts his paws around my neck and gives me a kiss :d :d

He's one big soft wonderful boy :d
- By louisechris1 [gb] Date 01.05.06 07:44 UTC
I used to have a Weim that stuck her head in the pond, blowing bubbles from her nose, to hunt for frogs.  When she found one she would scoop it out and carry it around in her mouth before getting fed up and dropping it somewhere in the house totally unharmed.  Current male Weim also sucks duvets if he can get one.
