Does anyone have any experience of Geckos? Somehow my husband and 7 year old son have just talked me into getting one to go along with our dog, parrot, 2 cats, 2 guinea pigs (one died recently) and fish.

What type of gecko is it? I would guess it will be a leopard gecko as these are the most popular. They are great little things, very friendly and docile. Eat small invertabrates and have a water dish. need one basking heat bub in one end of the vivarim and thats pretty much it :) they are very easy to care for and I'm sure you'll fall in love with it quickly.... CUTE!!!
Thanks for that. Jack is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo excited. We are going to look at them at the weekend but I am pretty sure we will be getting one as long as hubby and son look after it.
I AM NOT GOING ANYWHERE NEAR IT. YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My only experience of geckos is trying to catch them when I lived abroad to try and get them out of the apartment, which was impossible because they were so fast! Cute in a reptile-sort of way though.

I looked into getting a gecko a few months back ...they make good pets but need careful handling and are nocturnal so not very active in the day.In the end I brought 2 bearded dragons...slightly bigger than geckos but very friendly and love to be handled. They have individual characters and are relatively easy to care for.If you saw the adverts for Paul O'Gadys show it was a BD sat on his shoulder!

I have a snake, and if I ever lose him (as in he dies not escapes

) then I would get some geckos, they are dead cute
OOH couldn't possibly have a snake. I am really frightened of them. LOL
Aren't bearded dragons a lot bigger that Geckos?

Bearded Dragons are bigger, yes, but not as big as iguanas !
snakes are great, so easy to care for and he provides 24/7 entertainment for my kitten

Oh Melster!! lol :D
Gecko's are
gorgeous!! I promise you'll be surprised they are 'cute' as inconcievable as that is!! I had a pet one in my Hotel room in Jakarta for 2 months (His name was Montgomery Burns :D) they are fascinating with their funny feet with round sucker bits.. I dont really like Lizardy things..But a gecko..awwwww theyre fab and very sweet (honest!) :D
I've got a Leopard gecko and he is cute in a strange way, there is no way you get a real bond with them like a cat or dog but they are very funny little things. If you do get one the way they catch the crickets is so funny, the way their tail starts wagging. You do need to be careful handling them though as their tails are prone to fall off if pulled! I have also got a corn snake and he isn't 'cute' but is also great to watch moving around.
Went to have a look at the Leopard Geckos this afternoon with my son Jack. He is still very keen on getting one. I must admit at the moment they look very cute but they are so small. Not sure what I will think when they get bigger though. I just don't like reptiles. They give me the creeps LOL

They dont grow very big :) they sound big reading about them but alot of it is their tail.
I must say though that i wouldn't reccomend buying any animal from a pet shop unless they give you details of its parents etc. Many pet shops buy them from bulk animal sellers who dont really look afer them well and I have had several friends ignore this advice and 3 Geckos have died.
Try to go to a small reptile breeder who has bred them through love :) There are plenty on the internet to research.
Make sure they are captive bred and not wild caught....many are.
Thanks for your advice Zoe. The pet shop owner is a friend of ours so we know he is ok to buy from. Normally wouldn't for all the reasons you give but as I said we know this guy.
Thanks again.
i've had leopard gecko's before-i loved them. I quite often used to get them out and they'd sit with me on a night either up my sleeve or in my pocket of a designated shirt. The worst bit about having them was the crickets. They freaked me out big time-and locusts the way they hopped around. I always had to put them in the fridge to slow them down incase they jumped and escaped, or worse, landed on me! My friends brother accidentally left his crickets lid undone. Needless to say, they escaped, and set up camp in the house walls

!! And don't get me started on giant mealworms........
When we lived abroad there were always a lot of small geckos on the walls in the house. I wouldn't like to see one captive as they really dash around. They were very good at keeping the flies and ants at bay. I remember sitting in the bath and one plopped into the water, off the wall.
They didn't bother me at all. Now those eight legged things -

different matter altogether
