Topic Dog Boards / General / Which breed?

I'm sorry if this message is a repeat, I thought I'd already posted it but I can't find it - new at this game.
Anyway, I am soon giving up work and my husband to be and I are looking forward to owning a dog (or two) at last, as we have both wanted one ever since we were children.
I have always loved pointers and vizslas but am worried that we may not be able to give them enough exercise or space.
Also, we're planning on starting a family in 2 years. Should we wait until we've had the kids or do you think it's ok to get dogs before then?
Once kids have arrived, obviously there would be less time to devote to the dogs. Would two hour long walks per day and a 20x60 foot garden be enough for breeds such as this? If not, what would be a good breed for a family who loves gundogs?
By the way, can anyone recommend any really good books for beginners such as us?
Thanks!

Have a look at what the various breeds of dogs were originaly bred for. this will give you an idea about what you are letting yourself in for. Both Pointers and Vizslas are running dogs. Particulaly pointers who's job is to quarter the ground out in front of the guns pointing the game. Vizslas belong to the HPR group so again they would be well out in front doing their game finding job.

Just something for you to think about. :)
