Hi

Does anybody have any little tricks to get drops into a dogs ears? :rolleyes:

My dog is now wise to my every move and all attempts are thwarted.  I'm at my wits end!
Any ideas appreciated (and all will be tried ..believe me!)

Fraid not, my lazy lapdog is happy to have almost anything done if I tickle his chest and tummy! The other two are wriggly but not too bad. Think the idea of a team job might be the only way, with lots of fuss and treats afterwards! :-)

one of my boys is having eye ointment at the moment, I have to get him on the sofa and pin him there with my knees whilst one hand opens the eye and the other epplies ointment

If i have to give medication i make sure they have a irrisistable treat afterwards. Normally a custard cream biscuit split in half - other dog gets other half :rolleyes: but this makes it eaiser to do things to them they dont like like drops, tablets etc... recently they both have had tablets and after 2 days of doing this they ran to the biscuit barrel, they had the tablet with no problems then promptly reminded me that their reward was due :D

i try to do the same with ear dorps as eye drops and that is to come at my dog from behind as otherwise she sees the tube etc looming towards her. If I come from behind and speak nicely to her it seems to work.  Try moving your hand towards your face quickly and it's quite frightening (well it would be if it was a stranger and you didn't know what they were doing).

I recon not letting them see it in your hand is a good start I get it ready lid  off etc then put it in my pocket I put the dog in a down near the sofa blocking one way out ;) I then get behind them lifting the ear back but holding the head once the bottle is in the ear they generally dont move until its out give a gentle rub on the ear so it doesnt fly out when they shake ...they always shake LOL then a big treat.

I straddle my legs round mine get them in a half nelson then apply the ear drops :D

A little bit off subject but not, I was cleaning merlins ears the other day with cotton wool and olive oil, (vet recommendation) and he would sit right beside me watching me put the oil on the cotton really patiently then as soon as i was done he ran barking. He had me in stitches, dopey thing. I usually stand with his shoulders between my knees holding his head under his chin with one hand and doing drops with the oher. you have to be really quick as he hates it.
