Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Weimaraner can you show a long coat.
- By spellmaker [gb] Date 25.04.06 19:29 UTC
Hi everyone
At our obedience class we have a long coated Weimaraner and the lady who owns him asked if they are ever seen in the show ring, I own a pastoral breed so really wasn,t able to help her much but told her I,d probably be able to find out so this is where you guys come in Im sure some kind person out there will be able to help I,ve looked at the breed standard and it doesn,t actually say they can,t be shown but it is not the done thing in my breed  and I just wondered if the same applies to Weimaraners.
He,s a great looking dog I admit to not knowing the breed but he,s a very nice dog to look at and the first one with a longcoat I,ve seen
hope someone can answer my question.
Thanks everyone
Sharon

The breed standard says: (I have made the relevant sentences bold)
Coat
Short, smooth and sleek. In long-haired variety, coat from 2.5-5 cms (1-2 ins) long on body, somewhat longer on neck, chest and belly. Tail and back of limbs, feathered.

In addition, long coats are never docked, at least, I have never seen a docked long coat, but may be tipped (for the time being) to prevent the tail from curving too far. The extra coat protects the tail from damage, so therefor would not require docking.

Unlike German Pointers which are split into shorthaired, wirehaired and longhaired breed classes, Weimeraners are not split up so in a class of weims at a show, you can find all 3 coat types being judged against each other.

Are there wirehaired Weims too then?
- By Dawn-R Date 25.04.06 19:58 UTC
3 coat types? Are there wire haired weims as well then? I've never come across one if there are.

I just did a quick Google and couldn't come up with anything about wirehaired Weims

I'll ask my mate Mason Thorne of the Mabanika Weims I meet him almost every day when we're both out walking our dogs. He'll know for sure.

No, nor me.

I know of wire-haired Viszlas, but not Weims? They're not in the standard, anyway.
- By ChristineW Date 25.04.06 21:18 UTC
Wei's come in only 2 coat types, long & short, nowt else!
- By Dude Dog [gb] Date 25.04.06 21:48 UTC
I know of 2 wire weims that are both worked and was told by the breeder that they can occur rarely in a litter.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 25.04.06 22:16 UTC
I've never ever heard of Wired ones either, think that maybe the coat texture is just wrong!!
- By Dude Dog [gb] Date 25.04.06 22:29 UTC
Its probably a faulty coat type in terms of showing but maybe a throwback to the origins of the breed?

Havnt taken that much notice of the wei breed standard to see that they dont include the wire but in practice they do exist honest :)

Are they definately wire haired weims or are they slovakian rough hair pointers that look very much a lighter boned type of weim ????
- By MunsterSue [gb] Date 26.04.06 07:53 UTC
slovakian rough haired pointers are 1/3 weimaraner, 1/3 cesky fousek, and 1/3 GWP :) The two breeds (weim and slovak) do look very similar and the slovaks have met have a nice nature to them. There is also a longhaired vizsla variety...never seen one though.

"I know of 2 wire weims that are both worked and was told by the breeder that they can occur rarely in a litter."

They were conned!
There is NO such thing as a wirehaired Weimaraner. The wirehaired which is of a similar colour is a Slovakian Rough Haired pointer.

I think they are rather lovely too, spellmaker, but that is perhaps because I own one. ;)

Yes they can and are shown as they are not a "throwback" or a "fault" as in some other breeds.  Similar to one or two other breeds they can have two variant coats (St Bernards are another I believe) Shorthair or Longhair, it is exactly the same dog just with a different hairdo! :D

There have been two Longhair Show Champions in the UK to date (both males and both from the same prefix)  since 1974 when the variant first popped up here.  They are not "rare" just not as popular or well known as the shorts and some people dislike them (even I did at first, before I got one ;) )  One or two were placed at Crufts this year (including mine).

The advantages of the LH over the SH for those of us who are anti docking is of course the LH are not. (I have had shorts and longs).

There is no such thing as a Wire Haired Weimaraner in this or any other country.  There is a Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer which is an amalgam of the Cesky Foucek, Weimaraner and GWP; these can vary from being practically identical to a SH to very shaggy indeed.

I am sure that if there are any WHW in the UK both the Weimaraner Association and the Weimaraner Club of Great Britain would be very interested to know as would breeders who would be anxious to identify any dogs/bitches/lines that could throw these in order to keep them out of the breeding pool! (Just as we wish to keep "blues" out of the equation.

Mine is featuring in the May 5th edition of Dog World in its HPR showcase.

Not at all spellmaker! :) There is no wirehair weims, but then there are (or should not be) any brown (I dont mean roe grey) or brown and silver ones either, but I know of someone who purchased a brown headed one from a litter of brown, and brown and silver ones, and they were advertised as 'rare' and £700 or near was asked for them because of their 'rareity'. This person (who purchased the pup) thinks its great, she will use him on her brownish weim bitch when he's old enough because she can get lots of money for the rare brown ones! And yes, they were all KC reg!
There are also blue weims creeping in, and that colour is not recognised by our KC. But, the longhairs are lovely, and 'real' lol, just not so many about or as popular as the shortcoats.
