Hi i was wondering if anyone knows the procedures to bring a puupy in from America. Quarantine for 6 months? I was thinking of getting a Shih Tzu puppy in from America and am not too sure about the procedures and the possible costs. Has anyone done this before? And how much did it cost? THanks in advance :-)

Hi, yes we have done it a few times - with Pet Passports now a couple of ways to do it. The usual quarantine route (make sure you personally visit the Q. kennels before you book the dog to arrive in them - they vary Enormously! Or you can find someone in Europe to keep him for you for 7 months (1 extra month needed for blood tests) There are quite a few people offering this service now - most as an "in the home" service , not big business yet, so the dog is less unsettled, and of course you can go across and have a much better chance of getting to know the dog (and show too!) The last one we put thorugh quarantine cost about £1500 for the kenelling (shipping depends on size/weight - I shipped a cavalier to American for a friend a little while ago, it cost about £300). Havent had any exact figures for the Euro. method, but believe costs are about the same.

I am flying to America for this( if it all works out that is!) i am wondering if i can fly back together with the puppies? Might be a little silly to think that i can just pass through like that, but have no idea what procedures there are.

Depends on what you mean fly back with them - limited number of airlines will fly dogs, Brtish Airways do , Virgin dont. So if you pick one which accepts dogs you can be on same flight, but the dogs will be in the hold, not the cabin. On arrival at the Airport in the UK the dogs will be have to be transferred by an accredited Quarantine carrier to the Q. kennel you have booked (the kennel arranges the pick up for you) You wont actually be able to come into contact with the dogs until they get to the Kennel.

Totally different if you are bringing them into main land Europe - you can collect them straight from the freight handling section of the Airport, and take them to your chosen "holiday home". Hope this helps

At present there is six months quarantine for dogs coming from America. I know as I have just done this in partnership with 3 friends, and the puppy came out of quarantine 3 weeks ago. It has cost us around £3000 for Quarantine and flight and Import duty/expenses.

Quarantine for 6 months in the UK, if you do it through pet passpost/stay in mainland Europe, then 7 months. So no, you cant bring dog home straight away. BUT ther is now a strong possibility that pet passports will extend to the USA - possibility earlish next year.
