Hi,
Can I ask why most forum uses use initials for breeds and foods etc. e.g GSD and JWB. I am guessing but I think GSD is German Shepherd but why the D, and I know JWB but only because I feed James Wellbeloved but many abbreviations leave me lost. Its ok for the experts out there but I would think that many owners needing advice will be novice dog owners so please reveal your secret codes. I assume that you do want to share your knowledge with us.

Hi RC (good choice ;) )
GSD is German Shepherd Dog. Yep on JWB.
We all use abbreviations cos we're lazy really. Everyone has to ask what they are now and again, so pipe up and ask and we'll fill you in - or find someone who knows if we don't. Feel free to PM me if you get a complex about asking too often, but we're all happy to help out.
M.
I don,t breed dogs and I am what you call a novice dog owner. I too had trouble with abbreviations, but just ask for an explanation of the particular abbreviation and you will get a response. Everybody I have encounted on this site has always been wllling to explain in depth when they realise I don,t have a clue what they are talking about!

I think people generally use initials and other abbreviations to save time and formality, both in the spoken and the written word. You'll hear people actually saying 'GSD' rather than 'German Shepherd Dog', for instance, or 'cavvie' rather than 'Cavalier King Charles Spaniel' - usually written as CKCS to save wearing out a typing finger!
Thanks for the replies but everyone having to ask ask each time when a few extra letters in writing posts would avoid this. I already have one query what if the German Shepherd Dog was a bitch I may be wrong but I don't recall seeing GSB. Cavvie, I would be here for the next ten years working that one out.

The particular breed name is 'German Shepherd Dog' (actually, 'German Shepherd Dog (Alsatian)', but that only complicates matters! ;)). You can have German Shepherd Dog dogs and German Shepherd Dog bitches. :D Don't worry, you soon pick it up - and I'm willing to bet even you talk about 'labs' or 'labradors' rather than the correct 'Labrador Retriever'. ;). :)

Well, we all have to start somewhere :) I didn't know any of the abbreviations a few years ago - I still don't know them all, but that's life :) Learning the abbreviations is all part of learning more about dogs and that is what this forum is for :) Anyway, I've posted a link - so keep it bookmarked for future reference :)

HERE

For ages I thought LOL was someone's name! :o  :D :D

In my old job we used to have something called List of Lists - and we used to abbreviate to LOL. A friend put this on a messanger message and I had to ask why on earth she put List of Lists on her message - DOH!! Felt very old not knowing what is was!

ROFL at myself now
thanks for the link :-)
Donna

It's better than the people who come on here and refer to them as 'cavies' - which are guinea-pigs!

:D There are those of us who grit our teeth at 'dallies' - 'dals' is much better. ;)
Oh dear is rotties bad?? :). Don't mind Goldies myself.

I was told by their fans that 'Goldens' is preferable to 'Goldies'. It's a minefield! :D

Labrador Retrievers are usually Labs or Labradors.....
not Labbies

;) that just makes me cringe

Can't stand it when people say Goldies instead of Goldens!!!

It doesn't even shorten it, just make it sound silly!
I don't care what they're called - I have two and a rose by any other name...... :)

>Confucius believed that if names were matched properly to the things they described, order and stability could be created.
>One of his disciples asked, "The ruler of Wei is anticipating your assistance in the administration of his state. What will be your top priority?" Confucius replied, "To rectify the names." The disciple responded, "Why is that so important?" to which Confucius replied,
>"If language is not correct, then what is said is not what is meant; if what is said is not what is meant, then what must be done remains undone; if what must be done remains undone, the rites and arts will deteriorate; if the rites and arts deteriorate, justice goes astray; and if justice goes astray, the people will stand about in helpless confusion. Hence there must be no arbitrariness in what is said. This matters above everything"
In other words we are all off to Hell in a handcart :p :D

Well I don't know about others, but I NEVER say German Shepherd if I actually talk to anyone, I always say GSD. :)
But that could be beause I'm not in the breed, as I know people not in Belgian Shepherds tend to say BSD but when we in the breed talk we usually say Belgians.
