Hi folks,

Just a reminder that book club discussions for Ghost Girl will be on Sunday ... in case any of you haven't finished it yet.

Any suggestions for next month?

Does the book have to be on a certain theme or by a certain author etc etc?

I have never been involved in a book club before so please excuse my ignorance!!!

I have recently finished reading Ghost Girl and just started on another, "The Hornbeam Tree" by Susan Lewis ("A powerful story of the unbreakable bonds between a mother and daughter")?  Is that any help??

:):)

No particular theme or author, Kerri - book club idea was set off by gemma notts, who was keen to read some different things and get away from the chick lit a bit.

I think we've all aimed really for books that are a bit more challenging or on different subjects to what we'd normally pick. Think all the choices have gone down well so far.

Will go and search on the Hornbeam Tree.

I'm not in the Book Club (yet - I plan to catch up!) but I'm currently reading 'Dog Days' by Mavis Cheek. It's not a challenging read, but it's strikes a few chords! (And yes, I borrowed it from the library on the strength of the title alone! :o)

I am looking forward to the discussion on 'Ghost Girl'.  What about 'Moondust' by Andrew Smith for next month?  It was one of the 'Richard and Judy' book club choices!

That certainly falls into the realms of 'wouldn't normally read' for me - and that's the point of the book club. :D Looks good.

Here's another suggestion for next month:

Fast Food Nation: What the All-American Meal Is Doing to the World (Eric Schlosser)
The story of fast food is to a large extent the story of post-war America. In a perverse way, it is also the story of Britain since the deregulation of our food and labour markets in the early 1980s. Schossler's account takes in the whole of this prototypically global industry, from its origins in the hysterical competition of the southern Californian diners to the modern saturation of urban and suburban locations, from the revolutions in cattle raising and slaughtering, to the employment practices of the industry leaders.

Any other suggestions so we can vote at the end of the month?

EDITED TO ADD ... this is obviously a blatant attempt to scare myself into eating more healthily and losing lots of weight!! (Why do URLs go mad when I edit?)

How about Stuart - a Life Backwards by Alexander Masters?

Given to me by a colleague under the 'bookcrossing' scheme, I've been gripped.  It is the life story of a homeless guy and enthralling.

Ooh yes, I've heard that one recommended before.

Hello

What book are we reading this month?! I need something gripping to distract me from the horrors of a 5 hour flight  :-D
- By gemma_notts [gb] Date 02.05.06 08:18 UTC
I have to express my apologies at being so slack with regards the book club, I haven't read the last 2... however I have Stuart - a Life Backwards by Alexander Masters on my book shelf & am quite close to finishing my current read so that would get my vote!  I have read excellent reviews about it also!  I think the story it's quite similar to Curious Incident etc!

So is it a winner?
