Topic Dog Boards / Health / JRT being sick

Hi, just after some views for my friends JRT spayed bitch - aged about 4 - Over the last few days she has been constantly being sick and retching. She's hardly eaten anything and as soon as she moves to go out/get up etc she is sick.
They took her to the vets yesterday who kept her in over night. Picked her up today and the first thing she did (you guessed it) she was sick! The vets have given her antibiotics and  anti sickness medication.  She seems fine when she's quiet and still (as she was overnight at the vets of course) but when she gets up, thats when the vomiting starts.
I actually wondered if maybe she'd swallowed something or eaten something she shouldnt have? She does go off routing by herself when on walks. Do you think the vet should have xrayed her? I've also told her to take her straight back tomorrow if she's still not happy. Cant think of much else, help pls....

If your firend is that worried then get her to take the dog back to the vet and get her x-rayed. However, this may not reveal the problem as not everything will show up on an x-ray. Just make sure she has a credit card with her it could be expensive!!

Hi Becky
thanks - well the over night stay and treatment cost £70 and she feels she's no further on.I think she would gladly pay for an xray in the hope it might reveal something - then again, she could have her xrayed and as you say, nothing could show up? She's just keeping an eye on her for the meantime. She was bitten by a rat a few weeks ago (the JRT, not my friend!) - could that have anything to do with it? (she's racking her brains). She's a fussy little dog when it comes to eating and drinking though. She's been told by the vet to try her on some plain chicken and see how she goes on.

I would return to the vet if he is no better tomorrow ..I had a boy who had simiar problems a few years ago he was a little older but he had liver and pancreatic problems .

lets know how he gets on...its very worrying.

I've just come back from the vets with one of my sicking up bile and being off her food, the vet said in younger dogs (she's two) the most common cause is eating something they shouldn't and getting a stomach infection, and then a blockage, again with eating something they shouldn't! - she said if the antibiotics don't work the possibility of a blockage would have to be investigated but said that more often than not the object doesn't show up on the x-ray and then it means surgery. Think Moll will be Ok I can't really see her eating something that would get stuck.  Hope your friends dog goes on OK.

Thanks for your replies. I will tell her to take Lottie back to vets if no improvement - will keep everyone posted if anything else happens. With abit of luck it wont be anything serious but maybe best to err on side of caution. I've learnt this from past experience. Thanks again.
