Hi EVERYONE

I have a 7 month old bitch and was wondering when they are in heat. I got told that it was every 6 months. When she was 6 months old it did swell but wasn't bleeding but now she is bleeding. Also im thinking of breeding her but was wondering how long they are pregnant for?

Thanx

Is this your staffie X puppy?  Pups can have their first season anywhere from 6 months to 18 months, so 7 months is a definite possibility.  Please keep her away from all males for 4 weeks and then get her spayed in 2 months time.  If you go and look in your local rescue kennel, you'll find that the majority of dogs needing homes are Staffie and Staffie crosses.  They world really doesn't need any more. :(

Can I ask why you are thinking of breeding her?

She should be spayed and not bred from.  Did you ever find out why she was bald in places too as this could be a number of serious health problems?

While I really dont believe in quizzing people who enquire about breeding I really must make a comment this time.
I am planning to breed from my bitch for the  first time I have not considered this lightly I have been planning ,reading and getting advice about health test  from breeders and my own dogs breeder with 25yrs experience I have taken her advice on everything down to the correct stud dog etc. for the past 18 months.

My advice to you and I dont mean it to be condesending in any way ...If you dont even know when a bitch has seasons what to look  for etc: putting aside the health issues mentioned in previous posts I really think you should educate yourself on this subject first and foremost get as much help as you can from experienced people in your breed before you even consider breeding from your girl .

Regards

Roni

Please have a look at the video on this site and then ask yourself if you want to be the sort of person who adds to this problem? :(

For a start she's much, much, much too young to breed from yet, even if she was of a type of dog that wasn't suffering enormously from over-breeding, with unwanted ones being destroyed daily. Keep her away from all other dogs for 28 days from now.

A bitch is pregnant for 63 days from mating, but i would agree that she is too young at the moment, I also know very little and find this site very informative if sometimes you feel that all your getting is 'TOLD OFF'!!! However one excellent piece of advice that i received was to buy the "book of the bitch" by j e evans and kay white.  This is a very good read and will give you most of the advice that you need.

Your right clair, they'll not get much encouragement on here to deliberately breed crossbreed puppies!  Probably because most members at some time or another have helped with rescue.

I can't understand how they actually manage to sell cross-bred puppies. A few years ago now, a friend's bitch escaped and mated with her stud dog, but the bitch had had a litter 10 mths previously, so she certainly didnt want a litter, but it was a good bitch and she did hope for puppies a couple of years on to keep one for herself. it was a 'slip mating' so, fearful of the abortion injection, and not wishing to spay, she crossed her fingers and prayed. The mating produced 3 healthy puppies, but as the dog was also her half brother she was not happy to register so advertised the puppies as pedigree but not KC reg. A lady already on her books took one, but she had a hell of a job finding the right home for the other 2 simply because either the homes were not suitable, or the enqs wanted a kc reg puppy so it could be certain it was not a crossbreed! So, in this day and age of people wanting the 'correct' thing, I just can't understand where the market is for puppies from cross-bred litters. I would have thought if someone was paying a lot of money, then if they wanted to boast it would be possible with a KC reg one--We have a very red pedigree, dad won at Crufts you know, Mum was a multiple feild trail champ etc etc--but you could hardly do that with a cross-bred that didnt even look awfully like the 'true' breed anyway? Or is there a new 'snobbery' where a cross-breed has become the elite? I must be oldfashioned, but I think if you can't prove parentage then the puppy/dog is a mongrel. The word Cross-breed just seems to make it more socially acceptable. And i love mongrels, grew up with them as family dogs, and neighbours had them too. Some have such lovely unique looks, and all the ones I knew rarely had illnesses eat anything and lived to very old ages quite healthily. They happen, but sadly most now seem to end up in rescue homes and have their lives ended because quite simply no one wants them. I'd like to bet that, when the phase for cross-breeds dies down, these dogs will join the rest of the mongrels in already overcrowded rescue kennels. Such a shame, and if I bred a cross-litter I would be seriously worried that one of mine could go that way and I'd never know. Which is one of many reasons why I'd never breed one.........
