I was wondering about your experiences with different breeds and shedding. First dog we had (I was still a child) was a Toy Poodle, so obviously there was no problem when it came to shedding.
After that we had a black Labrador and that was a nightmare...... hair everywhere, even in our food!
After that I had a fawn Staffy cross and she was also shedding all year around, but her hair was light brown color, so it wasn't as visible on the wooden floor. Now I own a Long coat Chihuahua and I can't find any hair at all. I'm not sure whether it's because he's so small or it's because he has a long coat. I have heard many people say that long coat breeds don't shed half as much as the short haired ones. Do you think that's actually true? How do you deal with the problem though..... daily cleaning?

We have a one year old GR who has just finished a major moult, she shed so much that I'm suprised she's no totally bald :D.  We have laminate flooring and leather sofas so cleaning up is not to bad not sure how the hoover coped though.  We did hoover at least once a day and tried to limit her movement round the house (she was not allowed upstairs).  We also brushed her much more often than normal.

With our munsti, we have to generally vaccum every day to every other day. She doesnt moult as bad as many breeds but her nature is 'canine cyclone'...so always on the go...so hair generally flies! Thank god for dysons... lot of hassle vac-ing so frequently but it is just one of those things that you do and live with.

I dont think long coated breeds shedding is as noticable as short with good grooming a long coat the hair stays in the brush or it turns int big balls of fluff rather than loose hair everywhere.

This is what I thought as well.......

Some of you guys are hoovering every day!! Waaaa, I feel like some really lazy person ;)!! LOL But seriously my hoover is a real drag to take out and set up. It's too big and I simply don't want to use it as much as I should.

With 3 Malamutes, I vacuum twice a day when the girls are shedding. I usually have a green carpet, at shedding time it turns white regularly

Hmm ....Mals are not LONG haired but they have longer hair than short haired breeds and their hair gets EVERYWHERE, even with grroming everyday during the moult

Snap, you live in my world :D
- By Brainless [gb] Date 24.04.06 11:28 UTC
Living room where the dogs are needs hoovering twice daily just to be decent.
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 24.04.06 12:12 UTC
Agreed :D
- By STARRYEYES Date 24.04.06 12:21 UTC
I am not saying they dont shed I am merely stating that you dont find hairs everywhere it rolls up into little balls  which can be easily picked up , a well groomed bearded collie you can run your hand down them and not see a hair fall!

I find I have to hoover more because I have 4 cats and they make more mess which I presume is similar to a med or short coated dog.
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 24.04.06 15:40 UTC
We find hair everywhere , in our drinks, on our clothes, behind the sofa ...I mean everywhere :D It sticks to the carpet rather than rolls into little balls (who told you that I wonder? ;) )
- By Daisy [gb] Date 24.04.06 16:21 UTC
We have a mixture (two different coated dogs) of balls of hair and hair stuck to everything :D :D The kitchen (where the floor is tiled) looks like an American prairie sometimes with large balls of hair blown into the corners :D :D Fortunately, we chose the tiles well (a sort of variegated grey colour) and the hair (black and white) is camouflaged :D :D :D

Twice a day. I didn't think that was possible. I'm sure I read somewhere that the motor had to cool down for at least a week before it was used again. :-D
- By Daisy [gb] Date 24.04.06 15:36 UTC
I have other things to do with my time rather than vaccuuming - goor grief, whatever next  - how would I ever spend so much time on here (or at work :D ) if I vacuumed so much :D :D

I have Elkhounds aned their hair even gets pklaces they ahve never been like freinds cars, my Dads who hasn't had them visit for several years.

Just something you live with to enjoy a cotaed breed :D

Bit of extra protein and roughage in the diet must be a good thin doesn't it
- By louise123 [gb] Date 24.04.06 13:56 UTC
My GR appears to be shedding at the moment he just has to shake and she loads of hairs go flying round the living room. I try and hoover once day, but if we didn't have cream carpets i think it would be more.
- By spellmaker [gb] Date 24.04.06 14:05 UTC
When my German Shepherds cast their coats my living room looks like one of those Australian sheep shearing sheds there is hair everywhere:rolleyes:
Not too much of a problem as it gives other half who took early retirement something constructive to do whilst I,m busy at work
I would hate for him to get bored and have to much time on his hands.

LOL, that's a good one!!! :) I am planning on getting a Schipperke in the future and I guess I'll be in the same boat as German Sheppard owners when it comes to shedding. I think they have the same quality coat..... but luckily their bodies are a bit smaller ;). not that it makes much of a difference though.... a few of those little devils and it will be like having a GS!

this made me think about our choice of pup - I wanted a springer spaniel, oh wanted a weirmaraner because they moult less.

I convinced my oh that my last springer had a bad coat due to her medical problems (which she did, kind of) and eventually he agreed for us to have a springer.

We've now had her for 6 months and I hoover every other day (although could do with it everyday), she gets brushed daily, and we are forever covered in springer fur...hehe.
We havent come across it in our dinner yet

One thing that always confuses us is how come if you wear blac all the white hairs stick to it, but if you wear white, the liver fur rarely appears? weird.
- By Animad [gb] Date 24.04.06 16:18 UTC
Ok from my experience : Labs - nightmare
                                 Boxers - Brilliant
                                 Great Dane - good
                                 Cavalier - nightmare

I have had various breeds in through fostering and to be honest it depends on the dog not the breed. Not much help after all . sorry. :)
- By Lily Mc [gb] Date 25.04.06 06:34 UTC
I'd disagree on the Dane coat, to be honest. Those hairs just seem constant, and are like needles, sticking into all manner of stuff so it's virtually impossible to remove them.

Thankfully, my fairly extensive experience of this is someone else's house and car. (Have you ever looked at the roof of someone's car if they travel Danes a lot LOL.)

No short coats for me, at least the long hair stays on top and waits for me to get round to it. ;)

- By Val [gb] Date 25.04.06 08:01 UTC
I'd agree with that!  I had a friend come to visit for the day with her Dane when I used to have dralon Chesterfields.  I was still pulling the hair needles out when I parted with it 5 years later!!
- By Ory [si] Date 25.04.06 08:22 UTC
Oh yeah....my friend owns 2 Mastino Napolitanos and a Great Dane. Her house looks like it's covered with fawn/black colored grass LOL.
- By ShaynLola Date 24.04.06 16:22 UTC
We have wooden floors but at the minute, with a moulting Newfie in the house, it looks like wall-to-wall carpeting   If she doesn't decide to put her coat back on soon, I'm going to advertise her as a new breed. Do you think there is a market for hairless Newfoundlands?? :)
- By Izzy bear [gb] Date 24.04.06 17:39 UTC
Snap, I have 2 shedding newfs at the moment so at the weekend both were bathed and blasted in the garden. So there I was hoovering the garden:rolleyes::cool:
- By ShaynLola Date 24.04.06 17:42 UTC
Aha! I now see the downside to multiple Newfie ownership  Better hope the OH doesn't see this as he's already agreed to the second one :D
- By Izzy bear [gb] Date 24.04.06 17:48 UTC
Well once hes agreed there is no backing down is there? Anyway stick me on ignore and he will be none the wiser.:) Whats a little hair (or a lot) between friends, neighbours, people who live 4 miles away? :)
- By Sarah Gorb [gb] Date 24.04.06 17:43 UTC
My Rottie is shedding at the moment and there is black fur everywhere. Luckilly I only have to go through this nightmare twice a year. I was advised to brush her, then give her a bath, the brush her every day.

My last dog was a collie x GSD and he left his fur everywhere all year round.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 24.04.06 17:47 UTC
Two of my dals hang on to their coats reasonably well unless they decide to have a full-blown moult (at a time of year chosen by themselves) - if brushed every day they only lose about a little each time. The others aren't so restrained and will cheerfully drop at least a handful of hair every day - in addition to the amount they leave on the floor!
- By Trevor [gb] Date 24.04.06 18:01 UTC
7 Belgians = mega amounts of dog hair ! - I hoover every day but can never be totally hair free - the worst thing though is that we hav'nt got round to getting rid of the (cream) upstairs carpet yet and it shows every single Groenendael hair  I'm planning to take it up and sand/wax the floorboards - MUCH easier to cope with.

when one of mine moult I can fill a bin liner with the contents - I have 3 shedding at the moment - you can guess what it's like at my place :D

My old Afghan x used to moult all year round and also twice a year for good measure   Despite regular brushing, combing and hoovering, his fur drifted around the house like tumble weed   we'd even find it in the fridge  in the bedrooms (he wasn't allowed there) and the bathroom (he wouldn't go in there except under duress, eg. dragged in for a bath :) )  The Burmese cats were also the same, except the coat was shorter ;)

I always found with the shorter cats coat a damp rubber glove or rubber brush was brilliant in getting the dead hair out :D

I don't suffer with dropped hair now, Bdlingtons don't moult the same as other dogs :D :D
- By briedog [gb] Date 25.04.06 08:31 UTC
the fcr are shedding they once year coat now. the spainsh water dog dont shedd so will be clipp once or twice a years,

i hoover every day but still find the odd hair some where it should be.
- By ice_queen Date 25.04.06 08:39 UTC
OUr setters either have no hair or the drop their coat, literally and the house (laminate and tiles) is coverd in tumbleweeds or the short hair just lyes on the floor.  We have to sweep at least twice aday on a normal day, when then shed it's more then that!  When we had carpets it was a nightmare of hoovering 2-4 times a day!  Either that or contantly walk in grim, hair, dirt etc :(
- By Minipeace [gb] Date 25.04.06 11:11 UTC
Hi
My Newfie has just gone through his mass hair loss time and I found it easy to keep the house clean and free of loose hairs. I spend up to an hour a day, each day grooming him from top to bottom and it has helped to keep the house nice and hair free
I just love grooming him, he feels lovely after a brush and looks fantastic. It also helps to keep him smelling nice too :)
