HI all im rather confused (it doesnt take much lol) when i got my first bullmastiff i was obsessed in finding the best complete for him everywere i asked/looked i was told the same thing LOW protien as he needs to grow slower as to not put pressure on his legs ,well when i got my bitches they were on tripe and pedigree prof well people dont speak very highly of it and to be honest they dont look that good so i started my search again for a food that i could feed on its own as tripe and complete for 3 hungry bullys adds up ,well the same name kept cropping up with bullmastiff peole royal canin so i rang them and they sent me 2 sacks well i was horrified whan it arrived as the protien was 36 % in puppy and junior was 32% so now i am totally confused is this not far to high ? as the food smells great the dogs love it but i am worried about this protien any advice on this or an alternative complete for a large breed would be great thanks dawn

That's odd because Royal Canin make a lower protein food for large breed puppies. I would have thought they would have sent you that.

Hmm, just checked the website. The giant puppy food has higher protein than the large breed. odd, they must have their reasons and I'm no nutritionist so won't comment

I don't even use the pup/junior and go straight onto the adult can't you do that?

I've never used anything else but adult and i thought it was widely known not to feed high protein pup food to a large breed.

:)

Its not the protein you have to watch,so much. But the calcium and phosphorous,to higher levels of these 2 minerals is what causes the dog to grow too quickly,,i bet the cal/phos levels in the giant food is considerably lower than the puppy, junior etc etc. even if ther protein is the same.
Remember the average raw diet is around 30-35% protein and large breed pups have no problems with this,if anything they tend to grow slower on a raw diet, its when owners start messing with the calcium levels and adding in extra is when the growth problems tend to be seen :( It also throws the cal/phos levels way out of whack, because people add calcium but dont think about balancing it with the phos.

Maxi junior is 32% protein. If you want a pdf of the contents I can email it. Just PM me.

when i bought my ddb i was advised to use James wellbeloved as the pup one is 29% protein i think, for atleast the first year.
