Topic Dog Boards / General / Excessive nipping???
- By kerrib Date 22.04.06 21:22 UTC
Misty (gr) is now 10 weeks old and doing really well so far :).  She loves her food, is weeing and pooing whenever we let her outside and today has actually sat by the back door waiting to go out and doing her business.  She sleeps all night from about 11 till 6.30/7 without any accidents or whimpering (had her 2 weeks now and only 1 accident during the night so far).

Problem:?  Not sure really .  I know that puppies chew constantly and nip etc but the last few days, her nipping seems excessive  and quite determined   What is the best way to discourage nipping and biting. Misty seems to have a couple of mad moments a day where she runs around like a headless chicken trying to dive on the settees/tables or anything that moves .  We can have really good play sessions and she is gentle as anything and learning but during these mad sessions she seems to get quite forceful with her biting/nipping.  I have tried the distraction approach with a toy but it only lasts for a few seconds.  Have also tried the "no" and ignoring/turning away approach but she then insists on biting/nipping the back of me (as I am usually sitting on the floor it, my backside seems a good target ) and she is very vocal with it.  :(

How should I approach this?  The more I say "no" the more she goes for my hand.  Not sure if this is really normal or not.  If not, any advice would be greatly appreciated. :) :)

Hi Kerri :)

This is all very normal for young pups - they *explore* and *play* with everything and everyone using their mouths.  Try printing off the info in this link http://www.jersey.net/~mountaindog/berner1/bitestop.htm and ensure everyone in your household is 100% committed to following the instructions ;)  It pays off - but don't expect overnight miracles.

best wishes, Teri

It is all completely normal but it can be made worse by too much protein. What are you feeding and what is the protein content? We do have a play biting leaflet that we could send you. I will get my daughter to do it as I am not that good with computers. :-)

Hi Jimbuck
We are just feeding her what our breeder recommended which is Beta puppy.  Currently it is the chicken and rice one, soaked in water(typical 29% protein).  She also has the odd scrambled egg and sometimes chicken or tuna.
Do you need my email?  If so I can pm you with it.
Regards :)
