I just bought my GR a new tag from ebay and just about to fill in the engraving details and I remember reading on here a while ago about what is legally required on a tag....Is it your address AND phone number, or just phone number? Do most of you put on the dogs name...? I remember my mum always saying you shouldnt because if any one stole them they would know their names and be able to call them away! (Im thinking if someone wanted to steal her, they would take her anyway and not really care if they had her name or not!)
Just wondered what everyone put on their tags?

it is a legal requirement to have address and phone number and i think your name - but need to check that
i usually have as many numbers as i can fit on + "I am microchipped and spayed" plus my address
As part of our Bronze GCDS test we had to show our dogs were identified properley and the examiner(who had taken and passed the KC GCDS Bronze examiner test) said you need your name, your house number/name and postcode. This is to make it easier for the police to trace you but means that it is not obvious to all and sundry where you live!
Phone number, house and mobile is a good idea...but IMO no need for your dogs name!
HTH :)
Earl has 2 tags, the 1st has my name and address on one side and my telephone numbers on the other side. The second has "Warning, this dog is microchipped" on the first side and "Dog is Tattooed & on National Dog Register" on the other side.
I've been advised by people 'in the know' not to put the dogs name on the tags.

Legally I believe you need your postcode and your VETS telephone number, or if not legally, responsibly. The dogs name is a very BAD idea as someone can then at least make a pretence at owning your dog if your dog happened to then respond to his or her name when called.
Me, I would use my mobile number (so I don't feel if a dog got out that i needed to stay home incase someone called), house address, postcode and vets number with 'vets' written above that number

mine are actually registered with 4 vets! Why the vets number anyway? Never heard of that one

No, the vet's number isn't a legal requirement.
Mine have my name, address and phone number on one side and the vet's number on the other.

No, nor had I until I failed my good citizen silver with one for not having it on there....

So the KC system demands something that's not required by law? How silly! I wonder why it doesn't specify that on its website? There it only says "all dogs must wear a collar and identification tag." .... "These essentials are part of the law."

The KC does NOT demand anything different than that which is required by law. However not ALL people who examine the KCGC tests are KC approved examiners, neither have they been on any seminars or passed a test.
As a KC Approved Examiner I often find that people are told incorrect things and dogs are passed when quite frankly they should not be.
The law and the KC require only that the owners name and address appear on ID tags, anything else is an optional extra.

Nice to know. This very much WAS an acredited trainer and one who regularly attends seminars etc, but possibly she brought a little of her own personal 'like and dislike' into it. have to say have also stewarded for another test day, entirely different trainer who also asked for vets tel. numbers to be on the ID. Not saying you are wrong, but some certainly DO want this info on before taking the test further.

If the examiner is a KC approved examiner (in KCGCS) then they should be reported to the KC for conducting the test in an improper manner. The whole purpose of having KC approved examiners is to bring the consistency so obviously lacking in the scheme from the posts here.
The guidelines that KC AE receive are quite detailed, and so are the seminars and examinations.
There are very few KC "accredited" trainers yet in the UK which is an entirely different thing......

I'll bear that in mind when hiring in the future for our training days. I'm sorry to use the word 'accredited'. I'm a very open soul. I'd be happy to share the names of the trainers involved with you via email. I have written, whilst the topic is 'live' to both asking them to clarify or if my mind is going grey and senile. I'm certain its not.
I don't think 'reporting people to the KC' is the way forward for folks who give up their time on an almost volentary basis.

As I use more than one Vet I would find that a pain. If a vet were needed for one of my dogs I woudl hope they were taken to the closest.

My dogs have their bronze and silver awards and they only have their own name (

) and my telephone numbers on their tags.

*puts paw in air* and admits to just having home and mobile numbers on my dogs tags. Oh an libby has one that says 'smile or I'll poo' not very helpful I admit:rolleyes:
Only home and mobile numbers on my pup's tag too. He is also microchipped. Laughed at the 'smile or I'll poo' liberty :D

Trouble wqith that is a passerby who finds your dog liek em woudl happily walk it home for you if it has an address, but if it hasn't then it means having to take the dog home with you (not always possible with pups or bitches in season at home) and keep it until office hours to arrange collection by the dog warden who will then charge the owners for it's return, was over £30 a day last I heard.
Often find the phone number is out of date.
I ahve done this more than once and admit to leaving the dog hoping it woudl be foun by it's owner or find it's own way home :(

I found a labrador not long ago in the woods at the back of my house, it still had its lead on

It didnt have an address on the tag but it was quite happy to trot home with me and I phoned its owners who actually lived across the otherside of the village so I dropped him home on my way to work :)
I like to have my mobile number on their tag because if they go missing I wont be at home for someone to drop them off, I will be out looking for them, when Alf went missing he actually came home and my neighbour got my mobile number off of his tag and gave me a call (she thought I had had an accident and Alfie was doing a "lassie" going to fetch help :p )
>I like to have my mobile number on their tag because if they go missing I wont be at home for someone to drop them off, I will be out looking for them,
Thats a very valid point, as well as if you're away on hols with your dogs, your home addy may not help. Altho I do see the point made about having your address on the dog tag :)
The Control of Dogs Order 1992 states:
"every dog while in a highway or in a place of public resort shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar or on a plate or badge attached to it."

Oh gosh! Two tags! But doesn't he constantly 'jingle' ;-) Doesn't that drive you mad? Grin
Di

My dogs
have to wear two tags and yes, they do jingle constantly! As dog licensing is still a requirement here, dogs have to wear their license tag along with their ID tag...and I'm about to add a third saying 'microchipped & spayed/neutered!

....blimey! They'll be playing you a tune next ;-) Three tags - wow! I struggle remembering to get one done for each dog ;-(
Di

With 3 tags on, I'll never lose them as I'll be able to hear them miles away!! :D

I found that two metalic tags on was far too noisy :D :D Mine only have one - a Petsafe disc. I much prefer this as Petsafe hold our home contact details and our mobile numbers, so we can be contacted if the dog gets lost on a holiday or a day out - it's not much use having just your home phone number if you are a hundred miles from home :D They don't have our name or address and I'm prepared to take the (small) risk of prosecution :) Everybody around here knows our dogs ( :D ) and they just aren't the type to stray from home :)
Daisy

The problem I have is that, if I find a loose dog when I'm out (which I have a couple of times) if it has its address on a tag I can return it - if it hasn't, I have to let it go again and hope for the best. :(

If mine were in the habit of escaping/running off , I'd have my address on :D I've found a few dogs over the years and most of them have escaped from the garden while the owners were at work, so returning them (even if they had the address on, which they didn't - only phone number) wouldn't work. That's why a mobile number (or Petsafe etc, which I prefer) is better because the owner can be contacted immediately wherever they are :)
Daisy

If I had a phone with me, that might help - but as I generally don't ... ! ;)

As I live next door to the fields where we usually walk, I end up taking the dogs home (Bramble doesn't need a lead, so I use his for the stray). The last one didn't have any identity at all, so, after giving him some dinner, we had to take him to the police station. Obviously, I couldn't take a stray home if I was about to go to work or couldn't look after it until the owner claimed it :) Fortunately, people around here are pretty good, we know most of the dogs and strays aren't common :)
Daisy
I know when I had a tag made up at one of the Pets at Home stores, you had a choice of address and telephone no. or just the telephone number.
So I presume that legally you can have one or both.
The Control of Dogs Act 1992Wearing of collars by dogs
2.--(1) Subject to paragraph (2) below, every dog while in a highway or in a place of public resort shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar or on a plate or badge attached to it.
(2) Paragraph (1) above shall not apply to--
(a) any pack of hounds,
(b) any dog while being used for sporting purposes,
(c) any dog while being used for the capture or destruction of vermin,
(d) any dog while being used for the driving or tending of cattle or sheep,
(e) any dog while being used on official duties by a member of Her Majesty's Armed Forces or Her Majesty's Customs and Excise or the police force for any area,
(f) any dog while being used in emergency rescue work, or
(g) any dog registered with the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

Moon maiden,
Interesting you posted that - pleased you did. We do not allow anyone to have a collar on their dog during gundog training classes, nor working tests. Recently a puppy group chap wanted to keep his on because he said it was 'illegal not to' As they weren't working in cover in the puppy class I allowed him to keep it on but told him if he progressed it would have to come off.
Nice to know we are right in insisting that they aren't necessary during sporting events.

Thank you everybody, I have ordered the tag and have put My name, address, and phone number. There wasnt room on the tag for vets number, as they said you could only have 3 lines. She does already have another tag thats states she is microchipped.
(I quite like the jingly noise they make, I can always hear it shaking if she is trying to get into the bin in the kitchen!)

Legally it is the owners name and address (even in this day and age some people do not have phones).
I also include my phone number (full address) and use my affix instead of my surname as it is simpler

On the other side is states they are chipped and tattooed and to contact Petlog and NDTR

And of course now the councils can bring in their own rules and regs, who knows what they will come up with?

i have the dogs name, then on the back my name, address and phone number.
peopel do tend to read the name out when im on a wlak and they see the tag. i have never once had my dogs respond to anyone else when they call them. even my partner. but then i have a very unique high pitched welsh voice. that ussualy makes all the dogs on the field come to me when i call

all or my dogs are chipped as well.
i got mine from the kennel club, and have the dogs' name and address, and home phone number on the front, then my mobile, hubby's mobile and vets number on the back, with a "i am chipped" message underneath. Its the second set of tags i've had from them, and they're great. I've not seen anywhere else sell them that'll put 4 lines front and back for £7.50.

I think I can beat that Nicola ;)
As a result of this thread (and the realisation that I really don't want my dogs to be wearing 3 tags all the time) i went looking for some new ones that could be engraved with as much info as possible and found these....
http://www.collarsandtags.co.uk/brass-large-p-68.html6 lines of text on both sides for £4.99!! :)

I use
Pet Tags. They do brass ones with up to 6 lines of lettering on each side for £5.50, or coloured acrylic ones, with the same amount of lettering, for £4.50. :)

I have used these for years adn they are as good 6 years on as when I got them done. Only ever lost one, and that was the split ring giving way, and some kind soul posted it back to me. :D
bugger-i was ripped off :D :D!!!! Oh well. I know where to go next time!
I got mine on Ebay - £1.75 inc. postage for a good quality silver disc, engraved on both sides which however much text you want. Obviously the more text, the smaller the letters and the less readable, but one of mine has 5 very easily readable lines on a side. I bought it at 6pm on a Monday evening and it arrived in Tuesdays post - bargain!
Edited to add - happy to pass on the sellers Ebay ID if anyone wants it....

We could only find an engravers to do one side (max 3 lines) and the last line is almost unreadable!
Sounds ideal. :) :)

Our girls got 2 tags - a PetBack Protect one (which I was told was the only one she required as all our personal details are stored with them) and also saying "I am microchipped. Telephone if found (number)". I will get round to getting her one that says. I switched that over from one that had our house number, postcode and telephone number on. I intend to get her a new one saying "I am microchipped & neutered", postcode and telephone number. I also want to get her tatooed but she's really travel sick (haven't got it under control yet) and the nearest tatooist is 20 miles away  so am waiting on the new tag so I can put the fact she's tatooed on too

Edit to say - yes she does 'jingle' but we've got used to it :) Plus its no worse than a cat collar with a bell on it which again is something we're used to haha

I have a second tag from the microchipping that is totally ilegible, but keep them just do they jingle. Much easier to keep track of jingling dogs in the bushes and the dark.
