Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Davies Brawn?
- By NannyOgg [gb] Date 20.04.06 15:41 UTC
Has anyone heard of this food? It is apparently a meat pate/roll you can use as a mixer with dry feed. It comes in different flavours (lamb, turket, chicken, tripe, rabbit) and I was just wondering if anyone uses it, and/or what the quality is like? I currently use mince as a mixer - only ever two tablespoons in with my girl's complete food as a taste, as she won't eat the dry without it, and i was wondering if the Davies Brawn might be a cheaper alternative to the mince I am buying. If I had a chest freezer i would stock up on frozen mince from a supplier, but because I am buying it weekly froma supermarket, the cost is really adding up.

Hi not sure about Davies Brawn but in ASDA they used to sell one called Chub  which is very similar if not the same as Davies it comes in like a sausage shape and to look at its like ground up mush with a lot of water in it I,ve never fed it but I doubt if theres much nutrition in it the dogs will probably love it though as they do.

I am only interested in it as a tiny amount of mixer. My girl won't eat her kibble, which is already comnplete anyway, unless it has some 'meatiness' to it, so usually two tablespoons of mince suffice, but I was looking for a cheaper alternative. Seems like no one has heard of this Davies Brawn!!

Thanks for letting me know though.

You mean this

yes, that's the stuff. I just wanted to know if anyone had used it, what exactly the ingredients are etc. I have done a google search and can't find a website for Davies Brawn so wondered if anyone had heard ofit.

this is the same stuff as Chub, when I was a kid my parents used to feed it to our dogs when we went away as there were no freezer facilities for tripe, it always gave them the runs but then I suppose that was the change in diet.  I dont think it is that greater food to be fair, probably not even as good as tinned food, but if you only want to use a couple of spoons a day I dont see the harm in it.

For economies sake, what about just adding a bit of tinned food?  I think it would have more smell and flavour than the "pate".
- By ClaireyS Date 22.04.06 12:03 UTC
also tinned food would be easier to keep fresh than a chub.

Smart price sardines or something like that might do about 20 pence a tin in ASDA, I use these for Inga when she goes through one of her fussy stages after a season.

what tinned food is a good one? Something affordable and not full of rubbish.

Chappie is often suggested, but its not as cheap as it used to be :)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 22.04.06 18:23 UTC
I'd go along with Chappie too. :)
- By ClaireyS Date 22.04.06 20:07 UTC
yeah chappie.  I feed mine half raw half autarky, I ran out of food camping the other day and got them some butchers tripe, and they turned their noses up at it

Ah, one problem is we tried Chappie and she hates it. I mean, she didn't eat for four days when we tried to persist with it. In the end we gave up trying before she gave up refusing...
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 22.04.06 21:59 UTC
Was that tinned Chappie or dried?
- By NannyOgg [gb] Date 23.04.06 08:30 UTC
Tinned. I am thinking of trying her on it again (as it is just for a bit of flavour, not as her main meal) and just trying to persist longer than I did last time. Because she is only 9 months though I don't like it when she will go for days not touching her food. It is one of those situations where you don't know what to do. I am not sure if she is being picky, or if she genuinely doesn't like it, but either way, not eating at all for four days was enough to stop me trying. I know chappie is meant to be a really good food as a tinned option.

Tinned fish works if you just want to make the kibble more interesting. Since it's very smelly a little goes a long way - I get 3 meals from one small tin of tuna (I buy it in spring water). Milo loves his food with the fish in it and he's getting a little extra protein and all those healthy fish oils. It only adds around 15p per meal.

That sounds like a good idea. I have tried her with a little chappie in her food this evening and she flat refused it. She actually took some in her mouth, chewed and then spat it out. I know she is in good health, she just hates Chappie!
I think a trip to Lidl is in order to stock up on canned fish!

I was going to suggest fish as well :D

I am sure she will wolf it down :D
- By ali-t [gb] Date 23.04.06 19:31 UTC
I often add lidl tinned fish to my dogs food and for me its better than the asda smartprice stuff because the lidl tins have a ringpull but with asda you have to use a tin opener and I always end up covered in fishy tomato juice

glad im not the only one cheekychow, I can never get that fishy smell out
