Topic Dog Boards / Showing / CKCS weeing on coat - trimming tips please

Hi. I recently posted regarding my 7 month old cav ponging of wee as he's started cocking his leg but hasn't quite got the hang of it yet and wets all his tummy and front legs:rolleyes: I was given a tip to trim his tummy hair which I have done and its worked! My problem is the front legs.....he's still wetting the feathering and it really holds the smell even after baby wiping and sponging, will he look ridiculous if I start trimming this area? We don't do shows etc so cosmetic appearance isn't my main concern , I'm mainly wanting to find a practical solution to this problem without making him look silly. Is there anyway that I could tackle this on my own or would I be better taking him to a grooming parlour? Any tips will be sooo helpful! Also, instead of trimming the tummy hair with with scissors, would I be ok to trim it with clippers - just thinking it would be a little easier and I wouldn't be worrying about nicking his skin:eek: Any advice will be sooo helpful!

Thanks in advance

personally I wouldnt trim.
I have always had long coated breeds M/F I find the simplest way to get rid of the pee pong is to get a bowl in the garden of a morning with a bit of shampoo mixed in after they have toileted  dip thier feet in and towel down they are dry in a few minutes of running around ...no smell it is so easy and can become a routine until the males are older and thier aim gets better!

He's only a baby and so he WILL improve and get the hang of it, so don't jump the gun! :) I do trim the stomach of mine -but he is 11 with a very bad heart and sometimes falls over and finds it difficult to lift his leg up, and that's not going to improve. I never did it when he was young. I use clippers and just do the area in front of his willy -but beware as it is perfectly possible to nick the skin with clippers too. I think if you touched the feathering of the front legs it would look rather silly! Also don't forget once you have had clippers on a Cavalier coat it will never grow back the same (it will be thicker, woollier, often slightly curly) so be very careful of where you touch the coat -fair enough on the stomach where it isn't seen.

Don't clip whatever you do!! Get a pair of thinning scissors, the ones with one flat edge and one serrated edge. The ordinary ones from a pet shop will do, you don't need the super expensive posh grooming ones! Then stretch the front leg out (forwards, not sideways) so the feathering hangs downwards and use the thinning scissors to trim the feathering a bit shorter. You can use them to trim the skirt and the tail as well if you want. But don't clip, it'll ruin his coat!

Thanks for the advice - I think it's best I leave alone.
