Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Dog world or Our dogs??
- By king of bling Date 19.04.06 08:04 UTC
Hi guys I'm thinking of subscribing to the Our Dogs website as I can't get hold of the paper here in Northern Ireland. I am currently buying Dog World but I was told there was more reading in Our Dogs? Do Our Dogs give crituques from shows in Northern Ireland??? Thanks Clare

One of my friends recently left DW and went to OD because they are apparently quicker at printing critiques. So far I'm pretty happy with DW though. :-)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 19.04.06 08:12 UTC
I always found there were more and better articles in DW than OD. But I haven't read either for some years now.
- By tcarlaidh Date 19.04.06 08:58 UTC
I have had DW delivered for a while but I have cancelled cos it's just so expensive. I have joined OD on line members, it is great and a fraction of the cost :-)  You can do a free trial to see if you like it first.

I always had the papers delivered then changed to on-line BUT I now miss my paper :eek: I know a bit sad.

I am looking forward to my online payment running out so I can order the paper again.

I know it sounds daft but I love flicking through the paper. :-)

I have OD just now but flick back and forth to be honest .

It's 6 of one and half a dozen of another as to which is best. Many of us have found you need to have BOTH as otherwise you WILL miss some show reports. For instance this year our Crufts report was in OD quickly, still has not appeared in DW.  And before I started taking DW as well I missed loads of reports there.

DW every time for me:cool:
- By Dill [gb] Date 19.04.06 18:34 UTC
And some critiques will appear in neither :(

I have very few critiques for my first dog owing to them not being printed :( :(  despite doing very well I still don't actually know what most of the judges thought of her :(

Hi Clare

BOTH papers do a 12 week trial offer
1 paper is £20 the other one is £15 last time I checked
you could do both then see which you prefer and it gets delivered on a Thursday
most of the times too :)

I get both DW and OD.  DW has much more interesting articles but OD is better and quicker at some critiques and will print 1st and 2nd at some open rather than just the 1 which DW does.  I am lucky in that I can get both at my local co-op (although get DW delivered) and not sure what I would choose if I had to stop.  I did consider going on-line to OD but haven't yet done so.

I think both are good papers and if you can afford it stick with both!

I used to get Dog World, but found they were so slow at printing critiques. I now subscribe to Our Dogs online. They have critiques going back a number of years and I think they do cover the shows in Northern Ireland. The website isn't as good to flick through news and articles as the actual paper, but if you mainly want the critiques then it's ideal. They used to do a free 7 day trial, so if you decide it doesn't offer what you want you can cancel.

Dog World are not always slower at printing critiques, and if they are it is because they proof read them, unlike Our Dogs.  Has anyone noticed the amount of errors in Our Dogs?!!
- By CALI2 [gb] Date 20.04.06 07:30 UTC
I've noticed the mistakes many a time which is one of the reasons I changed to DW. I prefer the articles in DW and yes they are not always slower with critiques.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 20.04.06 13:13 UTC
Trouble is you can't save the critiques as copying anything is blocked.  I like to put the critiques on the back of the prize cards so at a glance I can see what a judge wrote about an exhibit when deciding if to enter under them again.

I used to get both papers but have just found it too expensive do stopped getting Our Dogs and haven't got arund to an online subscription yet.

 I've saved all mine and save my breed notes every week too off the OD website (just done it today, an hour ago), no problems at all. Also saved the breed article I wrote for the Crufts supplement, complete with photos and the lot. You can do it by simple copy and paste or even by Print Screen into any photo editing programme. Tried to save a copy of the photo of your co-owned dog just now and that worked fine too! :)

Sounds like it has changed to when I had it before.
- By Lily Mc [gb] Date 20.04.06 15:09 UTC
I certainly can't copy from it, either on home or work PC, unfortunately.

Have you tried using a different browser? I just tried, and it is only with Internet Explorer it doesn't work! Firefox or Netscape no problem! (Let's hope OD doesn't read this, LOL!!) Thankfully I wouldn't dream of using IE for anything. :D
- By Brainless [gb] Date 20.04.06 15:20 UTC
i only use Internet explorer as it is the only oen with the disability settings I like to use to overide.
- By Goldmali Date 20.04.06 15:22 UTC
What type of settings?
- By Dill [gb] Date 20.04.06 21:19 UTC
HI Marianne,

I also can't copy and paste or print out critiques from the OD website (I've got a subscription to it ;) )
You mention using firefox or netscape instead of IE, but where can I find them.  Also if it's my settings on IE, what settings do I need? (I tend to use maximum security settings etc. )

TIA for any info you can give :)
- By Goldmali Date 20.04.06 21:34 UTC
Hi
You can download Firefox from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/central/

Even if you use IE as your normal browser I find it is very useful to have more than one just for when problems appear. :) I don't know about the settings in IE I'm afraid.
- By Dill [gb] Date 20.04.06 21:55 UTC
Wow, thanks for that.

Bless you for being so well informed :) :)

I'm always amazed at the collective knowledge on this site :) :)
- By Lily Mc [gb] Date 20.04.06 21:56 UTC
Big thumbs up, Marianne, Firefox is just the job and I can now copy. You're a star!! :D :D :D

Glad to be of help. :)

Disability settings.  I have my text settings to large and overide teh default settings of black text on white background in all appliations to a dark green with salmon colored text.  For some reasons it doesn't work/or works incompletely (usually get the text colour but on white which of course I can't then read) with non Microsoft programs

I also keep my settings at 800 x 60o pixels, which creates problems with some things.

The most useful option is that which allows you to enlarge your pointer and also to make it go the opposite colour to what it is on, so if your on a blueare it turns yellow, w hite are turns black etc, so you never loose it. :D

I buy DW, because I find it a much more informative read. I subscribe to OD online, as they are much quicker at critiques and don't seem to edit them down to reduce their printing space - there is often more printed in OD. Can't say I've noticed any errors, to be honest, although when you're printing that much info some are bound to happen.

If I had to just have one, it would be DW. As subscription is much cheaper than buying the paper every week, I find this a good compromise (and keeps me entertained when I'm bored at work LOL).

I prefer DW as it has much more variety and I prefer the layout.
- By spanishwaterdog [gb] Date 20.04.06 12:59 UTC
I get DogsWorld, but have gone off it quite a lot since the format changed, God, I'd better not say that to one of the photographers who owns one of my pups.  Also not happy with other things but that's not really due to DW themselves :d

Didn't really enjoy Our Dogs but like their website.

I am also thinking of stopping my DogWorld unfortunately.

Dog world i love it:cool:
- By king of bling Date 21.04.06 09:18 UTC
Thanks guys for all the replys, I will keep getting Dogworld but I am going to join the Ourdogs website so I don't miss out on anything! Cheers Guys!

I first got DW as a freebie when I was fifteen, way back in the early 80's and muchprefer it to OD. The layout ad prit are much easier to read, and the articles more informative.

At one point, I had both but decided to give up OD as I preferred Dog World....so much easier to read as I get older!

When I started out as a kennel maid in the late 1960's Our Dogs was the paper to have. It covered everything in much greater depth than DW.
