I hope you can perhaps give me some more ideas, as I
had a lady telephone me this evening for advice as she
owns a dog and wants to use him at stud just the once.
A lady whom she bumped into at the vets has been begging
her to let her use her dog on her bitch when its in season next.
Which is now. She took her dog around and he was interested
sniffing but nothing else yet. Her dog is three years of age.
Now the lady who wants to use him actually contacted me
6 months ago and we told her to come back when her bitch
was older as it was just 18 months old.
I told the lady with the dog that for a one off mating it was not a good idea.
For many reasons apart from hip scoring to be done.
She said her dog suffered from hormonal problems and they thought
this would improve him. I cant say that I would agree with that
idea. So what else can I tell her, as she said she may call me
back for more advice.
I dont like the ideas of the dog down the road being used as
for a start neither of them no anything about this breed. They are
putting two dogs together just to get pups with out thought for
what they might produce. The bitch lady is seeing money signs
and the lady with the dog is being taken for a ride. Which I told
her. As the bitch owner is only paying a quarter of what she should
do. But apart from all that do I have the right to say what I
have done to her. She went very quiet. I dont like offending
people. I do feel quite strongly, and as I said to her. This lady
has the choice of several stud dogs, all that are to our breeds
standard and hip scored, eye tested, some shown, some not.
But all good specimens of the breed.
So any other thoughts why she should not breed just the once?

hi nutkin
i should not worry about offending people, if you feel very strongly about protecting your breed, you don't have to be rude but diplomatic but get your point and feelings across, don't know what the breed is but if hip scores have to be done, make sure they are well aware of this, the bitch owner is she prepared to be responsible for the dogs for all there life's.i realy can get to spiting point about breeding, there is enough rubbish breeding to rubbish out there with out adding more iv'e seen harlequine danes out there that resemle oversize dalmations, g.s.d that either look like hairy donkeys or fluffy border collies my own brother has just bought what was advertised as quality coursing/ racing stock he has a web page all looks very nice, says one is a show dog does not actualy show it but should of worded it from show stock, can this sort of thing come under the trades discr act, the dog does not even come close to the standard,no back roached back front is all wrong this dog you could not show ,race or course,so how do we stop people from breeding crap or buying crap when it comes to ped dogs, those that have been turned down by breeders will always keep the puppy farmers in buisness, sorry to go off on one here, these two people have to have knoledge of the breeding of both dogs and what is behind itbefore they even think about it, does the breed have hereditary problems put them off with somthing along those lines,
other than that can't help, good luck regards tina

Thanks tina,
I can see you feel the same way about your breed as I do.
Mines Weimaraners.
Trouble is people see money signs and they do not think
about what they are going to produce. They may even be
brother and sister for all they know. She said she does not
understand the pedigree. Trouble is most people do not see
that how we breed now, determines the breed for the next
generation to come. If she calls again I will tell her more about
the breed problems. I do hope I put her off. Again I know that
we all start somewhere and I respect that if she wants to use
her dog at stud then she does have rights too. But its not hip
scored or eye tested. Although many people in my breed do not
hip score their dogs, a small percentage do get hip problems.
So they should be scored. I have my dog scored and will have
any of my other dogs/bitches scored.

hi nutkin,
good to here you are pasionate about your breed to, i do hope you get on o.k,when it comes to breeding and i read some of the boards i can tell you i am champing at the bit, have been on another board reg g.s.d english/germanic blood lines with someone called val who also feels strongly about breeding and we have decided that we are wasting our time with that pacticular post.i have awhippet that i show but have always had g.s.d the good bad and the ugly so to speak for the last 21 years.i had my sisters great dane bitch for nine months and she wanted to have a litter off of her so they could have another one, my first port of call the k.c for 5 gen ped and 4 gen ped with colour, cost £30. back to the breeder were things start to unravel slowly but with a lot of diplomatic digging found out accidental mating did not know bitch they had rescued from friend was in season, father has 2 court injunctions against him for attacking small dogs, fighting to keep him from being rehomed or destroyed
they also kept a bitch back as well, mother had a nervous problem and also could not keep wait on,not the best of sit, also she had to seek help as dogs were becoming a pack.not so good so far .then sent peds and photos of bitch to someone well known who researched the peds and advised, although she was ablue she had a lot of white on her and not permitted to show, she would of had to gone to a harlequine dog wich could end up with allsorts of mismarks poss a white as well, don't think so. iwas not prepared to breed rubbish appoint made that week to have her spayed.
there are those out there that just do not think of the breed and it's future as you rightly pointed out,let us know how things go,good luck regards tina
