Topic Dog Boards / Health / Advice on having my puppy spayed please
- By missmolly [gb] Date 18.04.06 19:16 UTC
Hi, I have a boxer puppy six months old, she is my little baby.  I would like to get her spayed, after reading various articles some tell me to proceed at 6 months and others warn me of the dangers, however boxers are prone to ovarian cancer so I am stuck between a rock and a hard place, can anyone assist.

Many Thanks

I don't know much about boxers, so you'll have done more research than I about them. :) At what age do they usually develop ovarian cancer?

'Routine' spaying is usually considered safest midway between seasons; between 1st and 2nd season is the most common. :)

Also boxer bitches are one of the breeds most often suffering a high incidence of urine incontinence once spayed.

Ideal time to get spayed is midway between 1st and second season, but you must do what is right for you and your circumstances and your puppy.
I have never had a Boxer but do know of 3 that were spayed at 6 months old.  One is now 11 years old and apart from routine jabs never needed a vet.  The other two are now 7yrs and 8yrs old and never had any problems either.
I have had bitches of other varying breeds spayed at 6 months between first and second season and much older, also unspayed bitches.  I have never had a problem with any of the spayed ones nor most of the unspayed except one unspayed bitch was incontinent and another had mammory tumours.
I do wonder if I had, had the incontinent one spayed would her incontinence been put down to the spaying.  This then raises the question how many other bitches that get incontinent would have still done so had they not been spayed.
Because of the area I now live in since the death of my husband I did get my Rottie x GSD bitch spayed at 6months to avoid seasons with the amount of loose aggresive dogs round here. ok she is only 10 months now but is fit and healthy also

Thanks for your advice, I guess I will be a nervous wreck whenever I have her done.  I have read up on boxerworld forum and it seems popular opinion on there to do it at 6 months........so I guess I will just have to go for it.

Has anyone heard of a tablet I can give her so she does not com into season??

Thanks again.

the above info maybe of benefit, although I spay all my bitches I do not do so prior to 18 months at the earliest.
