The Kennel Club is offering a service to register any breed and variety of dog pedigree and non pedigree in a Companion Dog Club....What are peoples views on this?....

Hmm - makes sense from the agility/obedience side of things, I suppose. What sort of registratons is proposed, I presume it will only show dogs own details, as parentage cant be known for many. It realy smells of just another money making scheme though, rather than a valuable registry. Do you think they are looking at the wider implications of compulsory registration, and are jumping on the band wagon early?

Think I agree with you on this one - but if it's what people want I guess the KC will be happy to take their money. Lets hope it is ploughed back into dogs in general and not just the elite. Ja:)kie

From what i can gather the scheme is being used to help promote good dog welfare and general good dog keeping... as the Kennel Club is a Charity and all money goes back into dog research i dont feel as if it would be a money making scheme...and as its a £10 membership for life it probably wont be cost effective on their part.

Have they specifically said all funds from this will go the the Charitable Health Foundation? It seems most unlike the KC, which is not a Charity, but a private members club, and a rather wealthy one at that, although it has established the Health Foundation for research funding etc. I don't think I have read anything about this scheme at all, and cant see why it will promote responsible dog ownership, but am all in favour of anything which actualy does that!

I would say that the kennel club have finally twigged about the amount of money that they are 'losing' by not offering a registration system for non pedigree dogs. I also wonder if they are getting jumpy about the number of *alternative* registration schemes that are spring up?
I'm surprised that it has taken them so long to get their act together.

Talking of the KC and their Health Foundation how do other feel about the fact that you have to delete the donation to the foundation on the Crufts entry form if you do not wish to contribute or wish to do so by some other means. Ja:)kie

I get extremely annoyed Jackie to anyone who thinks they have an automatic right to my money. I once had my credit card company add a payment protection insurance premium on to my card without me agreeing to it. I insisted that they remove it immediately or I would see them in court!
Regards, John

Must afree there John. Service Charges being added on in restaurants get me too.

Particulaly if there wasn't any, ;) Find the older I get the more irritated, still it's probably something the elderly do really well, complain that is. Ja:)kie

Leigh, I wonder what would happen if a non-profit group set up an alternative dog registry and began to administer shows/activities, maybe using FCI standards. It shouldn't be beyond the wit of man to set up an 'alternative KC' with open, or at least wide membership electing a committee made up of active dog people. In fact I wonder why no one has done it ... yet :-)

Nothing at all to stop you doing it, the only problem is that anyone running it , judging at it or competing in it would then be in contravention of KC rules, and would then be liable to fines/ suspension from KC activities, so the chance of many people attending would be extremely slim!
This happened in Show Jumping a few years ago, an 'alternative' to the British Show Jumping association was set up by a guy in Yorkshire, with a big equestrian centre. He offered a series of shows/classes, with prize money that exceeded the BSJA allowances and slightly different rules, jump heights (I am a bit hazy on the details after all this time) As far as I can remember he got a stiff telling off from BSJA, ran the show series for a couple of years, and the last I heard the equestrian centre was being used for car boot sales! People like to stick with the tried and tested, even if they compalin about it all the time!

What alternative schemes are there then?
