Does anyone else fine there dog is worse on the second walk of the day! because i have found my goldie a nightmare particularly today, he is normally a little misbehaved on his second walk. The first walk is fab and he does as he is told, but today on our second walk he was playing deaf again, i was so embarrassed i might as well of not been there!!

other way round for me, any selective deafness is usually in the first 10 minutes of morning walk if we see another dog...too excited..... but getting less and less, by the time hes 10......

Must be the day - my goldie was good this afternoon. I got his attention away from several dogs but this evening he went batty over a mastiff walking behind us. I was in dispair. I have promised more training as a reward. I'm sure he's excited at the prospect!
I also have found him more ignorant than any female dogs, so i have to agree it must be a male thing!!! Tyler is also annoying when other dogs approach or are even nearby he lies down and will not move, somedays if there are lots of people walking we don't get very far lol :).

It's much more of an afternoon thing although Nips mainly saves it for those occasions when there's maximum mileage to be got from selective deafness. Like when he meets a dog with a nervous owner. In those circumstances he'll meet and greet nicely, watch the nervous person flap a bit and then recall very nicely. Only to give me a look of sheer wickedness before turning round to go back and wind the person up again.
Hi
My staffy does this! He lies down whenever he sees another dog. Why is this? I read that it was a puppy thing to say 'hey don't worry, I'm only a silly puppy, I don't mean no harm!' but he's 18 months old now. He seems to lie in ambush and then when another dog comes up he jumps up and starts running around with them. Can anyone explain this?

Mine do the lie down thing when dogs are approaching but that is down to the hunting instincts in them. They always have selective hearing too which again is a breed trait!

A submissive puppy will lie down and expose its tummy to adult dogs, either on its side raising a leg, or fully on its back. A dog lying down on its front, staring at an approaching dog, will usually follow this with a rush towards the other dog. This can either result in a game or a fight - it depends on how the othr dog interprets it.
That sounds like my dog, when off lead he always gets the play reaction but onlead we have been having a few problems, so lately i have tried to drag him off which works eventually, otherwise he lies in wait and then pops up and sometimes frightens the other dog which is understandable.

Henry has selective deafness - someone even asked me once if he was deaf as he was totally ignoring me!!! :-D He hears the faint crinkle of the dog treat bag from half a mile away though!
