Hi everyone i am looking after my step brothers dogs till monday, Lady is a staffie cross bitch and buddy is a cross of every breed going i think.

Well lady was in heat a few weeks ago not sure how long ago it was and as far as i am aware buddy did not get to her as they were kept in there cages and let out seperatly.
Well my problem is this she looks swollen at her rib area and is constantly licking her vulva i cant check it as she dont like that part of her body touched and will actually bite me.

She is eating well and drinking seems happy in herself her teats dont look like there enlarging. He is not back until monday the 17th any idea's

thanks in advance

Get her to the vets. She could be suffering from pyometra. This can kill her. The vet will be able to tell you what to do.

Absolutely I second that. Don't wait for advice on here, go to the vets for expert immediate help INCASE it is something like the above.

All is well with lady she is pregnant so somehow his dogs must have got together, to get the both neutered and spayed once this is over so that this can not happen again this is her 2nd litter.

He is still convinced there is noway they could have got together but her scan and xray showed differently and i have even shown him the scan picture aswell as the vet bill which he is paying.

just thought i would let you know.

thanks fort the advice

I'm not sure I would describe that as all's well, you could show him the link in this thread It is not too late to stop the pregnancy.

Bearing in mind that you have written that this bitch would actually bite you if you examined her, I really think that it would be a good idea to have her spayed NOW so that she does not go on to produce unwanted puppies of doubtful temperament.

Don't x-rays only show pups in the last weeks of pregnancy??  Once the bones have calcified.

Yes, but the bitch was in season a few weeks ago so could be in the last weeks.  Do you mean you think it is too late to do anything?  Not if the bitch is spayed to remove them.

Ok, I was taking it that she was only around 4 weeks pregnant, first post was a week ago and OP said she was in season a few weeks ago.

I am not sure how long ago she was in heat he just said a few weeks ago, the xray showed skeletal development which would make her over 45days of pregnancy.
He dont seem to bothered about the fact she is pregnant again but then he is the type of person that dont worry about anything.
I personally wouldnt let the pregnancy go ahead and would have a spay abortion.

What happened to the last litter?  Did they vet homes and agree to take back the pups if there was a problem.  Even with experience it is very hard to be sure pups end up in lifelong homes.  It is litters like this that fill my local dogs home.

I judged a companion show ans afterwards had a family approach me about choosing a dog.

I suggested the Dogs home and they told me it was full of nothing but staff crosses and a few Dobes Rotties and Shepherds and small terrrier types.

She was very taken with my friends elderly but puppy seeming Spaniel cross something.

We had a chat about ascertaining what their needs were and the need to match those to the needs of the dogs they were interested in. (Collies, Springers aned lively breeds)

They are going to research the breed standards on the Kennel Club website to get a shortlist of breeds that would suit their lifestyle time and activity levels (13 year old son seemed to be drivng force in getting a dog), and I suggested they then contact breed rescue if they would prefer an adult.

What I am saying is that rescues are already at crisis point with this sort of cross, and their chances of finding a home are therefore lessened, as obviously they don't appeal to everyone.

Yes Alizan can be used up to 45 days in whelp and will cause the bitch to abort the pregnancy or absorb if early.

I'm not sure I would describe that as all's well,

Took the words right out of my mouth. She is a cross, will bite if you go near her rear and it is her 2ND litter:rolleyes:

What i meant by all is well, Is that it was not pyometra.
I am not happy that he has allowed this to happen, I do not believe in breeding crosses or even letting a pregnancy like this carry on.
I delivered her last litter that was the only time she let me near her vulva as he was away on holiday then aswell.

She had problems with her first pup when whelping lucky i know what to do otherwise that one or even worse the whole litter would have died.

Dont get me wrong she gets the best of everything, But as i have pointed out he is irresponsible.

Any way of getting her spayed then telling the owner it was necessary as there were problems with the pregnancy?? Dishonest I know, but best for the poor bitch!
- By Fillis Date 19.04.06 09:14 UTC
Thats exactly what I'd do. Best for the bitch and what happened between him and me would be secondary.
