Waaaaaaaaaaah, just 'gave a dog a home', snap decision, decided at 8pm and had her by half past so mind is a bit of a blur.

She was nine weeks old yesterday so its back to feeding four times a day, that's all I can remember, crash course please, its late in the evening for me to remember everything I have to know which last time I had weeks of book-reading to prepare for!

Good puppy food - do PAH tend to keep stocks of Naturediet Puppy?  That would be handy as that's what my other dog has but I don't remember seeing puppy variety so may need to pick something else for the puppy.  I didn't get her direct from breeders but from relatives who made a mistake so I have been given the tub of dry food she was sent away with, of which I have no idea what it is or how much to use, and some Pedigree puppy pouches that the rellies had been given her to so I need to sort the food out and get to PAH tomorrow to get something to start mixing with her old food that I can carry on with.  I think my local Burns stockists only do adult maintenance so it may have to be JWB if I can't get Naturediet Puppy from PAH unless anyone has any good recommendations.  Oh should say, its a JRT, apparently she doesn't have much of an appetite.  Right must fly off, need to sort out sleeping arrangements and flap around a bit more and...remember to breathe and all that stuff.  Ta for any help.

Deep breath...................and relax!! :)

PAH do stock ND Puppy (well, my local one does anyway). Try looking where all the puppy food as that's where it is in the local branch, not with the adult varieties.

Just a thought, but does the breeder know the pup is now with you? If not, you really should let her know as I'm sure she would be quite upset that her pup has been passed on without her knowlwdge.

Best of luck with the pup :) What breed is she, BTW?

Jack Russel I think ;) (JRT?)

D'OH! Missed that...really shouldn't post before my second cup of coffee  :)

Just thought I'd mention - I tried to get Naturediet from our PAH a couple of days ago and there was a sign up saying they were having problems with supplier and were currently out of stock??
- By jessthepest [gb] Date 13.04.06 09:44 UTC
Yes the breeder knows - in a roundabout way - they phoned her first on our insistence and she did offer to take her back but wouldn't give them their money back obviously and our rellies weren't going to do that and were going to keep looking around for someone to buy her instead to get their money back so the breeders know she'll be going somewhere else.

She is currently screaming her head off because she doesn't want to be in a crate and is only happy when on someone's lap which I need to work on now, I've only had 3 hours sleep and the noise is piercing!

I now appreciate how good a puppy Millie was, I just didn't realise at the time!

This is why I would always give money back once the puppy was rehomed again :(  Whilst I am sure you will be an excellent home I, personally, would always want to responsible for finding an appropriate home.

Have I got this right?  At 9 weeks old, this little one is looking for her 3rd home since leaving her breeder?  Does she have a problem?
- By Isabel Date 13.04.06 09:57 UTC
I think JtheP is going to keep her :)
- By jessthepest [gb] Date 13.04.06 10:18 UTC
Val, she's not looking for her third home, she's staying here so I hope she doesn't have a problem because I have that problem for the next 15 years or so!

Nature diet goes very quick at PAH.  I haven't seen the puppy ND in our local store but they do have natures menu puppy.  ND is still coming though in very limited stock and being brought the same day in bulk, and as one customer said "It's becoming like gold dust" as they walked out with 3 trays of it! :D  If you talk to your PAH they may hold some back for you depending on how nice the manager is when you ask!

Good tip thanks, I have a lot of trouble getting ND for my other dog at my local store but the next store usually has loads so I will go straight there.

Great!  I read it wrong.
- By jessthepest [gb] Date 13.04.06 10:38 UTC
Oh yes, I can see how I worded that a bit oddly!  What I meant was, we asked them to ring the breeder first before we made a decision about whether we would take her instead, so the breeder knows they can't keep her and were looking to rehome her.  But I don't think the breeder is as consciencious as others might be, because after all they let them take two littermates in the first place...

Also at only 9 weeks a good breeder would have no problem with a full refund as they are still likely to be able to resell the pup, not the same as an older pup or dog with little or no resale value.

Though it is emotional blackmail if I thought one of mine would be sold on I would buy it back even if I had to borrow the money.

"I don't think the breeder is as consciencious as others might be, because after all they let them take two littermates in the first place..."

Aww so little pup has lost her littermate aswell as her home - poor little mite :(  Congrats to you for taking her on though and not letting your rellies sell her to Joe Bloggs who probably wouldn't give much of a damn!  And I'm sure new pup and your other pooch will become great friends :)

I know, but I agree with the whole breeder thing, she'd only been gone 2 nights, it wasn't like it was a six month old pup needing returning, she would have been able to sell her on.  I would have given a refund under the circumstances if I was a breeder (which I never will be, I don't know how you lot cope!)

We are currently trying to get the rellies to speak again to the breeder, not that I don't want to keep her, and we had to go and save her last night as she was being terrorised and needed somewhere safe to sleep. We wanted a second dog anyway and this little mite curled up on my lap right now asleep is adorable and I want to keep her but I'm also wrestling with the whole matter in my head, we know nothing about jack russells, she is clearly terrified of other dogs and I can't help thinking she should be with a one-dog family.

Argh but then she would be uprooted again, she'd get used to my dog with time, oh its so hard I wish people didn't ring me with their dog problems!  We had the same situation with a chihuahua recently, fortunately I was strong enough to resist and put the owner in touch with Chihuahua Rescue instead, but its always so hard to know what to do for the best.

On a further note, regarding the food issue at the start of all this, I had a look at the dry food and it was clearly Pedigree Puppy, I remember from when my own dog was a puppy and got her free bag, the weird lumps of rice like things are a dead giveaway and so I have been in touch with Pedigree and found out how much she needs so that's all sorted for now.  The rellies (don't know why I keep calling them that!) said the pups wouldn't eat anything until after 5pm and would then only eat twice a day but she has already tucked into two of her four meals at my house and is showing signs of looking forward to the third!

Yes I agree that the breeder should have taken the puppy back and given at the very least a partial refund   However, from the fact that that was never offered I would question where your rellies actually got her from cos it certainly doesn't sound like a 'reputable' breeder especially from the fact that they were sold 2 littermates together in the first place.

With regards the little mite appearing scared of dogs - give her some time :)  Maybe she's only been used to her mother and littermates so any new dog will be a bit daunting.  It sounds to me like she's settling into your home, with you and that you're quickly getting used to her to.  With that in mind and the fact (by the sounds of it) you can offer her a good home with a doggy companion AND that you were planning on getting another dog in the near future anyway why don't you just keep her :)  I'm sure that way you'll be happy and she'll be happy :)  I know what you mean about not knowing about the breed - terriers are fiesty little things - but all of the JRT's I knew/know (which has been lots over the years!) are devoted to their owners and have to loveliest temperaments. Yes they can be dogs that are 'always on the go' but it depends on how they're brought up, how much time is put into training, how much attention is given to them etc etc.  I'm sure she'll make an adorable new addition to your family.

P.S. I want that Chihuahua ;)

Hi

I breed JRTs and I dont think  you can get a better pet.

It wont be long before she has her confidence and is ruling your house. She is a confused little girl.

Just out of interest what happened to the other pup?
