My next door neighbours have 2 german shepards. This is the fifth time they have lunged at me across the dividing fence (theirs) at my front door, one of the dogs ran and knocked my 9yr old son to the ground, i admit to kicking the dog cos i was very frightened it would bite him , it was growling and standing over his head. one of my whippets , in my opinion , very bravely attacked it and fought it back, they just stood looking stupid saying it wont bite!. In the past i have been unable to get in my own front gate as the male dog has hung over the fence having a go. they have now built a driveway and have no gate or fence, which leaves me feeling more vunerable, Itry to be neighbourly but have become angry with them . In my opinion their dogs are not exercised or socialised adaquately. They appear to be kept in a utility room too much. Opinions welcome. Thanks

surely they won't let their dogs out the front now, free to roam without any fencing?

i think i would try to make friends with the dogs, (assuming they are friendly ) with the owners help so they are happy to see you and dont lunge at you barking, if they associate you with a treat perhaps things might be nicer, speak to your neighbours about yours concerns.

They dont let them roam ,but if they are going in or out or have visitors , the dogs run out , if they are coming back from a walk they let the dogs run the last 30yrds off lead. They have no routine with dogs so i cant even time it . I think the dogs see us as a threat and feel a need to see us off.Our doors are next to each other with a 3 foot fence inbetween, small enough for the male to jump up and hang over snarling , the bitch is very nervous and cowers growling and snapping in the air. My whippets will jump up on the fence snapping back while my staffie runs to our door shaking. I am also concerned about the effects this has on my dogs.

They are far from friendly, i have bee nipped on the leg by the bitch , so im wary
think i might be inclinded to have a word with your local dog warden, maybe they might be able to speak with your neigbours and explain to them that there dogs behaviour is both threatening and intimidating.
Ive had similar trouble. Luckily the dog doesnt live right next door - it lives round the corner. Its a german shepherd and they always walk it off the lead usually at night. Twice now when we have been letting our dogs out last thing at night this dog has come charging down the road at us onto our property and attacked our dogs. They have absolutely no control over the dog and this dog has already bitten several people. Its terrible and the first time was when we still had our old Staffie and she was very shaken afterwards and had his slobber all over her. We reported it to the poilce the first time and asked them just to keep it on record but not do anything about it yet. The second time we shouted at the owners and said how many more times please keep your dog under control. I spoke to my friend whos a vet and she said that dog wardens are usually the best people to talk to rather than the police. If this dog ever does it again we are going to phone the dog warden up. Also this dog runs over all its neighbours gardens at night pooing everywhere - it is so irresponsible of the owners. Its terrible that you should feel scared and intimedated on your own property - if talking to the owners doesnt work then i would contact the dog warden. Good luck - hope everything works out for you.

Is it possible to put a fence on your side ??
doesnt mean you have to touch thiers!
make it a six footer after all who wants to look at those kind of neighbours plus it would be safer for you and your dogs you should feel safe walking up your own path.
Also agree with other posters re-dog warden.

thanks for your replies , i am mulling them all over. I will be brave and speak to the guy tomorrow (he is easier to talk with)and ask him to raise his fence and speak to the warden, i cant build on my side as it is concreted up to the door. Best wishes.

My front door faces onto the fence next door only five feet from the entracne, and their dogs always go bonkers, but of course they have a 6 foot fence.
I would contact the council/dog warden and insist they have their dogs adequately contained and not alowed to imtimidate you or your visitors.

amazingly our council has no dog warden. I have decided to write my concerns in a letter to my neighbours offering a few suggestions and wait for their responce. Thanks to all who responded.

I spoke to next door. The guy said he had no idea the dogs were running of lead, he will makesure that wont happen again. He claimed that it was not acceptable to the council to raise the fence but agreed he would not find it acceptable if my dogs were terrorising his children. he has said that it wont happen again. I wont hold my breath cos each time it has he claims was an accident, i have told him that i will report him if the dogs are near us off lead. Hopefully that is the end. thanks to you lot.
Well Done Jalle :-) Good Luck

So who is responsible for stray dogs, as last Autumn the responsibility for strays was transfered from the Police to the council??

An advisor with Bromley council in kent suggested i try the councils pest control , she thought they may have a word, although it is not their responsibility. Council are useless, very high council tax in this part of Kent , with sub standard services.

What part of Kent Jalle? I leave near Bromley, and they do have a dog warden, unless it has changed very very recently. BTW you can still get a fence erected on concrete. There are special post holders that bolt onto the concrete to hold the fence posts.

thanks for the responce. I'm under bromley council, they are very clear and say that there is no dog warden, they dont even have any idea of who has responsibility for dogs in this borough though a friend told me that in the case of lost dogs croydon council appear to take the job on and certainly did recently when my friend found a dog in bromley . Unfortunately if i errected a fence it would block part of my doorway. But thankfully my neighbours seem to be taking the matter in hand. thanks china blue.
