hi i wonder if any one can help my friends 2 mastiffs a male and female her girl was in season.she as kepped them appart as she did not want them to have puppies yet as she was waiting to have them both checked for everything at the vets, its the first time for both of them, unfortunately her young children let the dog out to the girl not realising,by the time my friend realised about a hour later she dashed out she doesnt think they did any thing but the dog had his penis out as if it would go when they have a tie but he was stood at the side of the bitch, it is 22 days since she saw this the bitch is seeming to put weight on not alot but enought to notice her teats have not returned to normal yet she went off her food for a day or so,we was just wondering is there anychance she may have been caught, she as booked her in for a scan i dont know when though she asnt said,i would appreciate any advice given for my friend

First it would be good to know what day of the females season this incident occured (where she caught them standing next to each other with the dog extended). It sounds very MUCH like he did infact 'have her'. Some matings, even at the bitches absolute peak do not result in a 'tie' and so the males penise has to return to normal outside the bitch and outside his sheath, so it is highly likely he did mate her. BUT the important thing is what day was this of the bitches season? Regardless of it being day 8 or day 20 she could still have taken, but its far less likely if it was at one of these extremes, it could then have just been the boy getting himself all overexcited and 'unnecessary' ;-)
The only possible advice that can be given is for the bitch to be taken for an ultrasound or xray. Her nipples being 'down' and her thickening across the waist is not a good sign although can be a phantom of course.
Ask her to take a good look at her vulva. Is it tucked neatly back or does it still look swollen and larger than normal. I find a swollen vulva not returning back to being neat and tidy is often a sign of pregnancy alongside nipples coming down, waist thickening and sometimes a little morning sickness. There is very little else to watch for until she gets, positively and definately fat without a scan.
Definately tell your friend unless she wants to just run with the pregnancy 'blind' (if there is one) she will have to scan her. There is nothing else, no pregnancy 'wee' tests or anything are avaliable for canines.
Good luck!

A bitch can have alizin up to 45 days of pregnancy to cause an abortion, if it is thew bitches first seaso it is very young, especially for such a large breed for her to rear a litter, especially as they do have large litters.

I have used this once and can say it was not overly negative, considering some have had very bad experiences with it or so other threads seem to show, with just a little sickness and a late next season as side-effects. Like a VERY late 'morning after pill'. I only used it on day 2 after mating so not sure about effects giving it 20 days into a possible pregnancy as this case seems to suggest.
I have some moral problems with giving it so late (up to 45 days as you say barbara) but I do too believe better to abort a litter in the sortof circumstances you mention, first season, no health tests done yet, novice owners rather than plough ahead.

Yes, and at least at before 6 weeks the bitch will absorb rather than abort. From what I have read on the drug it is actually more effective later than earlier.
