I know this subject has probably ben done to death but...my dog constantly barks when he hears/sees people outside the window I think the problem is that there are no clear boundaries outside the house (a farm conversion steading kind of thing) so when any person /dog whatever goes past he thinks they are on his territory as he doesnt behave like this when at our holiday cottage which has a garden seperating it from the street so he will only react if someone actually comes in the garden. Whilst I always find the barking annoying I'm more concerned now as someone is moving in next door to the adjoining house which has been empty for over ayear. I just don't want someone else being bothered by him. any ideas? He is a 3 yr old collie well behaved in every other way very sociable doesn't bark outside for any reason although he does do excitable barking/yipping if someone comes in the house.

we used to have an alsation dog that woudl bark at people walking past our house. it drove us nuts as he had such a loud bark.however we were concerned more about our neoighbours.

we have a pavement run right outside our frount window, with a small garden at the frount of our house. he was quite terratorial. however the fact that peopel were wlaking past the window, even thoguth not on the terrotory was still enougth to set him off.
in the end we did not let him into the frount room, and it solved the problem straight away becasue he could nto see peopel to bark at them.

if this isnt an option maybe some blinds so he cant see peopel walk past may help.

i had this problem with Tyko, i got some vertical blinds at the window &  it worked for us :) peace !!

The only thing you can do is not allow the dog acess to the window in the front room when you are not there to stop it barking.

Mine do the same (though it is mainly because they love visitors and get excited) as I live on a busy street with a Bus Stop outside, but do have a front garden.

The dogs will bark when people stop by or turn in my drive, people arive to the houses next door, or people stop to  chat by the drive.

If they can't see or hear them then they are quiet.

This means if I go out they go in the kitchen with the radio on and all windows and doors have to be closed.

It is perfectly normal for them to guard their territory, same as many dogs will guard the car if people come too close to it.
