Hi

What age do you let your pups go to there new home.

Different breeds develope at different rates but on average what is the best time.

I never let mine go before 8 weeks. They will be going the following weekend so they will be 8.5 weeks. But have been thinking about innoculations. Most vets like to do at 8 weeks, My vet prefers the pup to be in the home a couple of days before jagging  them so this would make them nearer 9 weeks before getting there first injection.

Would I be better letting them go the weekend earlier at 7.5 weeks and then they can be done at 8 weeks.

There is no way  I am letting any pup leave me unless I am 100% happy that they are ready to go regarless of there age.

I always let mine go before 8 week, usually a day or two after 7 weeks. That means they don't go at 8 weeks as many say it's a bad age to go (better either earlier or later), and it also means the new owners can get them vaccinated at 8 weeks. :)

I don't think our breed goes till they are 8 weeks, but when I got mine I had them booked in for their jabs, microchip and the 'once over', the  very next day. Saying that the second one already had been microchipped before she left the breeder :)

I microchip my pups myself as well, but my vet will NOT vaccinate a puppy that was only acquired the day before, he say the have to have a few days to settle first.

Ditto. I let them go on a saturday morning (to give maximum time to settle before the week commences) on the weekend between their 7th and 8th week.

i let my litter go from 8 weeks and the owners did the jabs mostly because the vet will probably repeat the vaccine because it will a different brand. Next time i will allow pups to go from 7 and half weeks for 3 reasons:
1) mum finished feeding at 7 weeks and washed her paws of the pups completely
2) by 7 weeks they needed 1 to 1 care from new owners- hard to give to 8 pups
3) i had both my bitches at 7 and a half weeks and they were fine and settled in quickly
i think it depends on the breed smaller breeds need more care for longer

My pups start leaving from the weekend before they're 8 weeks. It's been a few years since my last litter and things may well have changed, but my vet at the time wouldn't give the first jab until 10 weeks anyway, to be sure the maternal antibodies had worn off.

I sell mine from 8 weeks onwards, well I did for litters 2 & 3, I feel they have their own characters by then, have been away from mum for long enough  and are more than able to withstand longer car journey's (7 out of 9 from my last litter went to England, as far as Surrey/Kent - I live in Scotland).

I like to worm them for the last time at 8 weeks and let them go 48 hours later once I'm happy they have no probs. They seem to need to go by then. ...know what I mean??!

Absolutely! It's extraordinary how quickly they mature and gain independence. The difference in 'neediness' between a 7½ week pup and one a week older is quite staggering. If they reach 9 weeks without loads on one-to-one attention there can be problems - in my breed, at any rate.

my own, 8-10 weeks.....12 weeks at a push if I am struggling to decide which to keep!!  However, one of my deerhounds came to me as a 6 week old:eek: & she is the most balanced (temperament) and superb creasture you could ask for. On top of that our lakeland pup was aquired at 4.5 weeks:eek::mad:  and is also proving to have the most superb attitude to life....far more outgoing & sociable than some of my own pups have been!!!

I didn't know they ever went that early.

HI

That is very interesting. I am thinking the weekend before they are 8 weeks would be the best. They were born on a Wed so splat in the middle of the week.

Must admit I got my present dogs at 6 weeks. Not my choice on either But in both cases the breeders said come and fetch as they are ready. I felt they were far to young but now they are both very well balanced dogs so it didnt do them any harm in the long run. Possibly because I had a certain amount of knowledge about pups. I wont say knew what I was doing as that sounds like a know it all but you know what I mean lol.

All my pups are going to experienced homes and they will be around all day to look after them. I do feel sometimes it is important to get them to be individuals rather than a pack.

If it was up to mum she would let them go now at 5.5 weeks. She now sleeps with me again and I am the one that gets up to them in the morning when they want brekkie.

My Spanish at 7 weeks my Pomeranian's around 10 - 12 weeks, preferably 12 !

just out of pure interest, may i ask why the two breeds you have ,perrodeagua, go at different ages ? :)
- By bedruthen Date 09.04.06 21:41 UTC
As a new puppy owner can I just add that I was nervous of having our pup early at 7weeks, even though I have owned the breed for over 25 years. She seemed so vulnerable and I was so worried about looking after her properly.
So I guess what I am saying is that it is a judgement call between pups readiness to leave and the new owners experience, if that makes sense

Hi

Just found this again lol it was moved. Did wonder why it had gone??

I am very aware how the new owners will feel about getting there baby so young. But it is only a couple of days short of 8 weeks. If they are not happy I will hold onto them until they are. I have suggested to one person so far and she is delighted. Another is coming to visit tomorrow so will see how she feels.

But again they are going now were unless I am 100% happy with them and if that means holding on till they are 12 weeks I will. But the way they are at the moment I dont see that happening.

Mine start to go the weekend before they are 8 weeks, don't get them ear tattooed until 7 weeks as those with nice small ears are too small before then, and I also want them wormed a few days before going.

It is rare for me to ahve a mass exoduc and in practive they leave over about two weeks with the odd pup staying longer.
