Hi all
I have an 8 month old dobermann with a docked tail. Unfortunately his tail has been done badly, and has a bald bit at the end. This gets knocked quite often when he sits down on a hard surface, and can bleed quite a bit.
I was at the vets yesterday, and he said the only way to solve the problem may be to re-do the tail. Now his tail has actually been left quite long for a dobe, so there is some scope for a bit more to be removed if necesary (sp). I hate to see my dog constantly getting a sore bleeding tail, so am of the opinion that this operation may be a good idea. But obviously don't want to put him through any operation that is not needed.
What do people on here think?

If the dog is in pain and the vet has recommended a re-dock, then I would be guided by the vet.

In my personal experience tails are very difficult to heal. Mine had his tail amputated after a year of trying various things to help the healing process. Despite efforts by vet et al, the bleeding continued on a daily basis.
I would agree with your vet.
I think your vet is right. One of my RRs split her tail and after months of trying various things, we had to give in and have the last couple of inches removed. It was completely successful and you'd hardly know.

My first Boxer had the same problem. Vet tidied it up and he was fine I'd go for it

Thanks for all your replies.
It's reassuring to hear that others think it is the right decision to have the tail re-done. I will get it arranged asap!
Thanks again
