General / Does Your Dog Respond to His Name When Other People Say It?

My dog does. But my neighbour's big GSD, which often runs loose, doesn't seem to know her name is Charley. When I talk to her and try to be friendly she acts like she doesn't even hear me. There isn't even a flicker of an ear or a blink of an eye. Maybe she's deaf? When her owners call her she doesn't pay the slightest heed but does appear to hear them.
Oh mine certainly know their names :d :d What with one running across the ring at a show ground when someone called him by his nick name of Ickle Man :d

Mine responds to her name and also "where's that dog?" which makes me chuckle.
She also responds to what the kids call her, Pookie, Mike man

Myster

Where do kids get these nicknames from?
Of all those though she responds to her name the most reliably. As far as other people are concerned yes she does respond to her name

Yes, anyone who calls his name gets his attention - provided a bird isn't flying over his head!

Only if they are of interest to Willis. If so, they can call him anything they like cos he is still going to come and investigate :D
Saying that - Willis also answers to: BED, OUT, NO, and "whats that bl**dy dog got now" :D :D :D

Mainly yes. But he's such an attention seeking tart that he rarely misses an opportunity!
He also responds to "This Dog" and "Your Dog" - in the context of "while you were out, This Dog has been a complete pain!"

Yes he does but also to people who are calling their dogs who have a similar sounding name. Luckily me calling his name overrides their call.

Yes... even if in training the trainer uses my dogs names tghey will rush over to her as though they've been called.
WE had our last dog attend one of those active photography sessions with us... and they are used to having dogs. The photographer was amazed our dog knew his name which I thought was daft cos of course he did.... ...but maybe they get an lot of dogs who don't.

Heck i have a husky who only responds to her her name when she feels like it or when food is involved :D However, when she's in the mood she also responds to young lady ,

Yes, when they stay with my various friends while we're away they have no trouble recalling them off lead (or haven't mentioned any!) :-)

Huskypup, that's called "selective hearing" isn't it? I thought that was typically a male syndrome, prevalent in all species. LOL

Yes, I think selective hearing is part of it but also it is all about character, my girl knows everyone loves and adores her - unfortunately  She reacts best to male voices, probably because she's a proper flirty gertie :D

My borzois completely ignore other people calling their names, even members of my family who come for walks fairly often. They will respond instantly to me calling them, providing they're not chasing something of course! If my brother calls them their ears don't even twitch, unless he has liver cake:) The collies will go to anyone who calls their names. I don't think it's to do with knowing or not knowing their names it's more a reflection on their characters. The collies love everyone and want everyone to love them. The borzois love only me and don't particularly care about anyone else :D
