Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Feeding guidelines?

Hi everyone :)

How many of you follow the feeding guidelines on the back of dry food? I feed JWB and my dogs would probably eat less than 3/4,sometimes less, of what the guidelines recommend.Ive put the amount it says they need in their bowl and there is NO they would be able to eat all of that! Mind, they also get fresh food additions and bones. Was just curious if anyone feeds exactly what the pack says,or more?

Hi Kate,
I think most folk agree the weights/guidelines are on the generous side.
Funnily enough tho' Im just reading a booklet 'Guide to Natural healthcare' by John Burns (Burns dog foods) and he states:

>you can undo the value of good quality food by overfeeding<

(think he means you get expensive poo's!)
you know your dogs best to be honest (Im sure you know this!), as there are many other factors to consider with feeding amount beside the size of the dog, such as How much exercise, type of excercise, warm enviroment etc etc..
I personally always feed under recommended amounts especially with sedentary dogs.
HTH :D

Mine are about the 20kg size and eat less than the amount Arden Grange state for a 15kg dog.

With other foods it has been half to 2/3rds the amount they stated, and seems to be similar with everyone I know who have dogs of the correct weight that is :D

I'm one of those people who never read the guidlines a plus side with dry complete food is I can fill up a bowl and my dog will eat at her own leisure once empty I just re-fill it, I have never had an overweight dog in my life. Chicken and meats with rice etc are gobbled up immediately but the dry is nibbled on throughout the day and night.

Metabolisms and eating patterns are different with every dog, so mine have always chosen themselves when and how much to eat.
