at the moment i am unable to walk my 3 dogs, the reason beining last tuesday i sprained my ankle quite badly but after a few days started walking them again then on tuesday afternoon i again sprained my ankle again the same one, it is very very swollen i have been told by the hospital not to walk on it for at least 5 days. i just wanted any ideas on how to keep them occupied and exercised they are getting really bored and are starting to grumble at each other.

What a shame Bek, it's not easy to rest when you have 3 dogs! I was in a similar situation last year, my brother walked the collies but I wouldn't trust the 'zois with anyone else. Do you have anyone you can trust to walk them? Do you have a garden? If so then endless games of fetch, throwing a ball, playing tug-o-war would work. You could also do more little bits of training to keep them mentally occupied. I also reduced the zois food slightly and gave them more bones and kongs that would keep them occupied for hours. unfortunatly i have moved away from all my family and as it was only 6months ago i have yet to meet any new friends yet. i am married but my husband is not a dog lover and has never walked thm. i do have a garden and have been playing a lot of fetch but they are getting over excited any start really rough playing so i do sort play sessions. the thing with bones is i have one on a food trial so have had to stop all treats and bones to all 3 i cant give one without the others. so as you say endless games of fetch:eek::eek:

Sorry to hear about your ankle :(

Surely your husband could walk them for you even if he isn't a dog lover ?  :)

That would be the least he coiuld do whilst you are laid up ;)
- By bek [gb] Date 06.04.06 18:18 UTC
no my husband wont walk them he says he buys their food and pays their insurance and they are my dogs i wanted them.misserable sod:rolleyes:
- By LJS Date 06.04.06 18:23 UTC
Blimey :rolleyes: He pays it does he  That is very generous of him hey ;)

Thought about part exing the OH for a newer model BTW ? :D

Have you thought about hide and seek as another game for them :)
- By STARRYEYES Date 06.04.06 18:32 UTC
my hubby would be the one doing the walking.........right out the door if he refused to walk the dogs while I was laid up.  LOL ;)

Ring your local pet shop they usually advertise dog walkers in the area who might be able to help you out.

Other than that a few days in the house wont do them any harm its just like having a bitch in season they have no choice but to stay at home....dont worry

Just get that foot better lift it higher than you heart on a cushion get a big tub of Ben and Jerry's ice cream and make the most of it!!!!!

How about playing with bubbles in the garden? Mine loves his bacon flavour bubbles and it does wear him out. You could also try hide and seek, either with yourself or with toys??
Good luck :-D

Get yourself a clicker and some treats and the sky's the limit. I'm recovering from a slipped disc and if I hadn't had my clicker and a ball Zymi at least would have been going nuts.

Cava would probably still have been snoring :D

>i am married but my husband is not a dog lover and has never walked thm.<

I hear ya! My OH loves the dogs, cuddles, plays and pats them and all,but has NEVER walked them,i do all the hard work,he just gets the good stuff
I dont think my dogs would walk with him or anyone else anyway, i reckon they would put the brakes on at the front door and not move until i came :(

I twisted my knee really badly last year,i just got a pair of crutches and took them on their normal walks, mind you i walk mine off lead,i dont think i could have done it with them on the leash.Could you use crutches? That way you wouldnt have to put any weight on your ankle :)

Geeky Girl, where can I buy some bacon flavour bubbles??
My girls love bubbles and we have a bubble machine, but I cant let them play for long as I worry about the bubbles making them sick.If I could buy some that were made for dogs that would be great.Do they sell them in pets at home??

How about scent work or hiding their food around the place. If you have more than one dog and they squabble over food, put one in a room to find some and the others outside and do a change around. Gets them more interested that way. :-) If you let us all know where abouts you are maybe we can all help walkies time. :-) Get better soon. :-)

well hide and seek went well this morning they had a great time searching for breakfast. have already had a game of fetch so far so good, i cant wait to get back out with them i think i miss it as much as they do and as i dont work it is boring with out our walks to look foward to i think we will all be crazy by the time we do get to go back out
- By sara1bee [gb] Date 07.04.06 07:35 UTC
i think they will quickly get used to not walking, if you were on hols they could be stuck in a kennel with very little exercise, at least they have the garden
- By LucyD [gb] Date 07.04.06 12:20 UTC
That's a bit mean of him - my OH says they're my dogs so I walk them nearly all the time, but if I'm going to grooming college he will walk at least 2 of them, and if I'm at a show with 2 of them he'll often take the 3rd one on a nice ramble. :-)
- By spellmaker [gb] Date 07.04.06 14:29 UTC
Isn.t it funny when the dogs belong to both of you if they win anything at a show and then suddenly revert back to sole ownership if they are sick behind the door or wee on the kitchen floor, having said that the little miserable grey man will walk Inga if I,m of showing with Sengi.
hope your ankle is soon better.

I can't complain about the OH who willingly takes Nips on the last walk of the day when my mangled ankle goes on strike every now and again. It's just that like most men he has to be reminded that the dog needs the walk NOW. Not at some indeterminate time in the dead of night when he's finished faffing around doing the something else that "won't take a moment".

Sorry for the delay.....

I bought my bacon bubbles from crufts last year and we are still on the same pot . I bought it with a bubble buddy that is shaped like a gun and blows bubbles when you pull the trigger. I haven't seen them in PAH but I have seen them in my local pet shop.

The different flavours are: Sizzlin Bacon and BBQ Chicken or Sizzlin Bacon and Peanut Butter

I know that this website sells them at a reasonable price: www.doggiesolutions.co.uk (sorry but I don't know how to add a proper link)

Hope this helps
GG :-D

they have just got them in my PAH so look out for them :)
- By karenclynes [gb] Date 07.04.06 16:30 UTC
Hiya Waffy,

The bacon bubbles are actually bacon scented not flavoured and they don't smell much like bacon to me!  They do say non toxic/safe for pets and children - I don't know if the regular ones say that on the side it may be worth checking.  You can but them from www.dogshoponline.co.uk  Have fun

Carting (LOL) - they get more worn out than they've ever been and you can ride around like a queen in your chariot! http://www.cartingwithyourdog.com/ The girl in the photo looks happy enough.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 07.04.06 16:02 UTC
It was made illegal to use dogs to pull carts on public roads in Victorian days. ;) (In case anyone thinks of taking it up!)
- By Lori Date 07.04.06 16:09 UTC
Darn! Guess I'll have to stick to the skateboard. :-D
- By bek [gb] Date 07.04.06 16:11 UTC
:eek:think i will stick to walking well in my case hobbling. if i tried carting and the dog caught sight of a cat, well just put it this way i would no longer be on 2 wheels.
