hey all, i am in a dilemma and need your expert help.
i have a peugeot 106 hatchback which i need to fit my vizsla and mongrel in. problem is the far back is too small for the both of them, i don't really want to use harnesses as i find them a palarva (sp) but will if i have to. the problem i have with harnesses is that when my dogs have finished their walks they are either covered in mud or some more revolting substance which i don't really want to touch when putting them in the car.

things i have tried: all seats down which the dogs love but just isn't safe.
just a dog guard but as i say the back is too small for them.
two crates with all seats down don't fit as both cages are just slightly too big.
dog guard for vizsla and soft crate for mongrel on back seat - problem how do i secure the crate as the seat belt is  not good enough - any ideas.

the last idea is what i have at the minute but if people could help me out that would be brill

How about buying a single crate big enough for both of them, and have the back seats down? Two dogs should fit fine in one larger crate.

me too :) i am going to get a suitable one once i have my own house and enough money to afford one

because it is a hatch back and the back window stops me getting a big enough one :(

There are crates you can buy with a sloping roof section specially to fit into hatchbacks.  I've seen a couple advertised on Ebay and could get the brand name for you if you'd like?

We're picking our Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy up in 3 hours :)  Because we are getting a big dog and we have a toddler who still needs a pushchair everywhere we go we've just bought an estate car to fit everything in.  I'm having to sell my beloved RAV4 to do it though (boo hoo) :(

What about an Over the Top sling, which completely covers the whole of the back seats, from the rear headrest of the front seats, down over the seats and then up the back, connecting to the back head rests.  Chuck in some blankets for more luxury.  Then you just feed the seat belts through the Over the Top thing and connect harnesses to them.  Leave the harnesses in the car, clipped onto the seat belt and just clip the dogs in, in the car.

thanks for all the suggestions - i couldn't have a hammock thing because my car has no head rests in the back. but thanks for the suggestions.

i have actually sorted the problem. when taking the soft crate back my brain started working (doesn't happen very often ;) ) and i swapped it for a metal crate which i have weaved two seat belts through and is well and trully secure. vizsla behide dog guard and little un in metal crate.

I tried the hammock type and it ripped when one of the dogs decided he wanted to lie with his front feet between the 2 front seats,he wasn't fully grown ,a small breed and was also on a harness. Now I have it attached to the back headrests and tucked under the back seat to protect it from the dogs. I have a Berlingo enough room to transport,2 dachsies,2 humans and all their stuff for a holiday.

How about a front seat dog guard - then you can have the back seats down, the dogs can have the boot and back seat space, but can't get through the guard onto the front seats. Know what you mean re digusting things you don't want to touch after a walk!! :-D

I have a large metal guard right behind the front seats of my estate guard and have covered the guard in a huge clear plastic bag all taped round the edges. The rear seats hold it in place when folded down. This gives the dogs the whole back and stops all the mud flying forward after a walk...which is useful as I have to use the same car to get to work in a clean uniform!
