I don't think he's ugly - I agree, he was old. Cateracts and missing teeth don't make him an "ugly" dog they are symptoms of an ageing dog.
I think its terrible that his owner put him up for such a title at his age - for folk to laugh at him. Poor boy.

That is truly ugly! Hope he had a good personality.

Can't get the link to work, but generally I don't think Chinese Crested are very attractive, except the powder puff ones. :-)
I dont think there very nice owners putting there dog up for a prize for being ugly, poor pooch.
I was reading this and thinking surely it can't be that ugly, but too my surprise when i clicked on the link it made me grimace

Is it real? It can't be a real dog. I actually thought it was an advert for a horror film as well. Well done to the owners, i think i would have had nightmares. To who ever said it was cute you need yours eyes testing!!! Now really is it a real advert?
Have just had another look that can't be real!!! it would put people of chinese crested dogs forever!!

Aargh, got the link to work now - that is one evil hideous scary dog!! A normal Chinese Crested looks as beautiful as my Cavalier in comparison!! It must have had some serious skin problems to look like that!

Poor things dead now anyway :(
I have seen pictures of Sam before and read the story behind him and think it is one of the most moving stories I've come across.
Firstly, he was taken in as a rescue with major health problems, Otherwise he was to be put down. So credit to the owner.
Secondly the owner was diagnosed with cancer and says that Sam was the one who got her through it with his love and affection and became popular with other patients at the cancer clinic.
I do think he's lovely cos he gave his owner and a lot of people love and affection right to the very end.
I am quite amazed at some of the comments on here from doglovers. You can have the most beautiful looking dog with a terrible temperament that you can't live with. Give me a good, loving temperament anyday.
That is a nice story and no one is debating that temperment comes before anything, but it can't be helped that the dog is rather scary looking. Lets not get this out of proportion after all his owners must have allowed the pictures to be used.
I'm not getting anything out of proportion. I'm entitled to my view, the same as anyone else. After working at a dog and cat rescue, it saddens you that all the three legged one eyed animals are the ones that are mostly not chosen cos people can't see through a physical appearance. Yes he is scary looking, but some of the comments made are quite shallow.
Yes the owners did put Sam in for a competition, and with America things go bonkers in the news. I'm sure we've all done some humerous things with our dogs whether it's putting a santa hat on them or entering them in silly competitions.

but don't the people who participate choose to do it themselves?

Yes of course. But do you think the dog (now dead anyway) resented the attention he got?

No, but I don't like the fact that its being called ugly because it is old and has cataracts and missing teeth. We wouldn't enter someone who was 75 in an ugliest pensioner competition - I hope!
Personally I think the word ugly should be banned from the english language. In todays society far too many people are obsessed with physical appereances that nothing else seems to matter. There are children as young as 8 in this world who want surgery to alter their appereance just because of such an ugliest attitude and people being abused because they are different has lead to many an unhappy life. Everyone should be treated with the common courtesy that should be applied to all and be treated as the unique individual that they are and this applies to all of our wonderful nature.

Like one of the other comments, I didn't think he would be as scarey looking as that!

However as the owner of a one eyed cat and a bit of a soft touch for sob story (that how I ended up with the cat in the first place) thats is just the sort of dog I would probably end up giving a home to. I would probably always go for the puppy out of the litter that nobody else would choose just because I know all the others would find homes a lot easier and I couldn't stand to think of some poor unwanted one sitting there alone cause he happened to be a bit "ugly". I'm sure he was a lovely dog and ugly or not gave a lot of pleasure to a lot of people.
RIP Sam

I think the little dog was scary to look at in the picture. Of course there were probably dozens of pictures to choose from before they chose the one that would have most effect.
The comments on here are quite thought provoking. It would have been easier for everyone if the dog had a nasty temperament as then there would have been a consensus on how people felt about the dog. As it turns out the opposite applies and he brought pleasure and comfort. The story about Sam's owners says a lot about them and other people and how goodness and beauty lie within.
Don't understand how this relates. I don't have a problem if the owner was having a little bit of fun with their dog. What's the posted topic got to do with people pulling silly faceys.

It's all about competitions to look the ugliest/stupidest. If they're okay for people ... ;)
I see where your coming from. Blonde moment. I totally agree. What's wrong with harmless competitions. What I didn't like was the comments of almost disgust and how anyone could love something like that. It was a fab dog who did alot for it's owners and other people.

Aww I think he is adorable!!!
I saw a video clip of this dog on the internet somewhere (not sure where) I think it was taken from a tv show or news program in the USA.
The poor dog snarled almost constantly and snapped at anyone who approached it - he would not let anyone but his owner touch him. I think he was a rescue. Good on his owner for taking him on, but taking him out to all those competitions and showing him off in front of cameras was obviously very stressful for him.
yes i'd agree and say he's not the 'prettiest' dog, but ive known about him for a while, and seen clips of him and his past owner- he did suffer terribly, and i think he had some disease, always scratching himself too. so yes- i dont like how he looks but because ive known of his story- he doesnt shock or scare me anymore -- RIP sam! x
