Topic Dog Boards / General / Choosing a 'Posh Name' :)
- By Minny_Minsk [gb] Date 05.04.06 14:53 UTC
Please can someone offer any help with regard to any KC rules/regs about choosing a name to register a puppy?

My breeder called me and has said I can choose 2 names for my puppy, which musn't be 'common' names so she can send off the paperwork for him.  I've looked on the KC site, but can't find anything about choosing names, so I'm hoping they can be anything I want.  Can anyone confirm this?

Many thanks.

More questions than answers to start with.Does your breeder have a kennel name and how many letters is it ? As this will influence the choices you have and how many letters you have to use.
- By Minny_Minsk [gb] Date 05.04.06 15:00 UTC
Yes they do have a kennel name, it's 9 letters long.
Thanks
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 05.04.06 15:01 UTC
That means you have a maximum of 15 letters to play with. :)
- By Minny_Minsk [gb] Date 05.04.06 15:03 UTC
Ooooh excellent - I thought this was going to be a complicated process!  Thanks very much for the swift advice.

With 15 letters I can go for my favourite, I've managed to get 'Red Man' translated into Zulu and it works out 13 letters long - perfect.....
- By Jetstone Jewel [ca] Date 05.04.06 18:30 UTC
So, what is Red Man translated into Zulu?  Also curious as to what breed he is?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 05.04.06 18:33 UTC
My money's on either Basenji or Rhodesian Ridgeback. :)
- By Minny_Minsk [gb] Date 05.04.06 19:08 UTC
He's a Rhodesian Ridgeback (well done Jeangenie) :), only 39 hours to go until I pick him up!!!!!!!!!

I'll pass on the Zulu translations once I've got his name registered, not sure if any visitors here may 'borrow' the name for their own dog.  I've got three Zulu names chosen, translated as Red Man, Zulu Warrior and Gentle Guardian.  Fingers crossed one of them is OK with the KC.

o minny-minsk, what is the translation? and what bred is pup going to be
- By satincollie (Moderator) Date 05.04.06 15:05 UTC
So you can use up to 15 letters for your choices.Try to think of the names you like but think of alternative ways of spelling them and the less common the more likely they are to be accepted.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 05.04.06 15:00 UTC
The name can't be more than 24 letters long, including the breeder's affix. Usually a breeder has a 'theme' for naming each litter (names beginning with a certain letter of the alphabet, or film titles for example), but it doesn't sound as though that's the case here. It's important that none of the words are someone's affix, so you need to think of something unusual. You can't use the words 'dog', 'bitch', 'crufts' or 'champion', or anything obscene!

I must admit I like my new owners to choose the KC name, just includes them a bit more in the ownership of their new pup.

QUOTE <<The name can't be more than 24 letters long, including the breeder's affix.>>

Hmmmm our next dog (imported) already has a name that is 28 letters long - adding our kennel name will make it 39 letters!

Her breeders always give their dogs names which begin with the letter "G" and our little one will follow through the theme of her very famous grandfather - BIS BISS CH. ROYAL STAR DEL BIAGIO and have the word "Star" included in her name.

We're hoping she will follow in her grandpa's footsteps!  We know he's already very proud of her!

Your kennel name would be added as a suffix, so wouldn't be included in the total ;) Also, as it is an imported dog, they obviously have different stipulations on the number of characters allowed in that country - posters here are talking about the KC whom do only allow 24 characters ;)

I don't breed, but as far as i know you can choose what you like, but they aren't allowed to be rude names and i would assume anything copyright aswell. usually the breeders have to send off more than 1 set of names per pup ( I think my breeder did 3 per pup) as the KC then choose from that selection. Hope that helps, but I'm sure somebody with more knowledge than myself will be along to rectify anything

I thought puppies were registered well before they left? I'v never found anyone that I could name my own pup from as they were always registered by 4 weeks, even if the papers hadnt come back. Is this something new? I think the OP is very lucky
- By Brainless [gb] Date 06.04.06 08:11 UTC
You are quite rigth, and actually many breeders like to naem pups in a theme so wouldn't want people choosing names themselves, other than maybe giving them the choice of what they have already asked for.

I register mine once I am pretty sure none are going to die in the nest, at about two weeks.
- By ice_cosmos Date 06.04.06 09:51 UTC
We were allowed to choose the registered name of our second pup, however the breeder gave us the 'theme' she wanted to use and asked us to think of a name within that theme :)
- By Malakai [gb] Date 06.04.06 10:35 UTC
Same here :) I can pick my names as long as it starts with the right letter:cool:
- By LucyD [gb] Date 06.04.06 12:31 UTC
Henry's breeder knew we wanted to call him Henry and was lucky to be allowed her suggestion of Hooray Henry. :-)
- By helenRR [gb] Date 06.04.06 13:21 UTC
We didn't know it but the breeder of our Rhodesian Ridgeback named him for us. He is called Scorrier Surprise. We live at Scorrier and he was a birthday present for me (though not a surprise, i picked him!!)

When she handed us the form we were touched! (didn't quite make up for the fact he wasn't the puppy we reserved though:mad: and she got the colour wrong, but hey it's the thought that counts:rolleyes:)
- By michelled [gb] Date 07.04.06 10:11 UTC
hey helen....maybe that was the "suprise" ;)
- By RHODAP [in] Date 10.04.06 11:35 UTC
I was asked had I got any name in mind to be added to his registered name,so I stated what I was going to call him and expected something special incorporating it,I was very disappointed when all she added was her affix to him and 4 other pups names, only the one she kept got a posh name.
