Hi

why you cant feed cows milk to puppys?

People keep asking me and I really dont know. Would a little be ok in a scrambled egg for instance?

Hi Wendy
I used to give my pups cow's milk, with some evaporated milk added to it, with no ill effects.  Some people say it can upset their tums.  I have also used powdered lamb's milk, but I was worried in case it had any growth hormones or similar, in it, and also most recently used goat's milk.  I can't think that a bit in scrambled egg would do any harm.  It has never had an adverse effect on my pups.  Some people will only give their pups complete food, but I think that it is sensible to get their tums used to a variety of foods (I now wait to get shot down!!).  Mine have always had scrambled egg, some meat, and used to have some complete as well.
Best wishes with your pups - how old are they?

Hi, you can give your dogs scrambled egg without milk though, I just add water instead :)

By the time mine leave they're used to fresh meat (both cooked and raw), fresh fish and eggs as well as complete, and have had raw rib bones to gnaw. :)

The reason it's said that puppies can't digest cows milk is because they can't digest the lactose in it.  Some pups are more lactose-intolerant than others though, which is why with some you'll get runny poo and not with others.  I believe that yoghurt is ok, because the enzymes used to create natural yoghurt break down or denature the lactose in some way.  I'm a bit confused by it myself to be honest!

Goats milk is used by adults and for puppies for many reasons,

Just a few of the mineral contents compared to cows milk are below.

47% more vitamins
134% more potassium
13% more calcium
25% more vitamin B6
3 x more niacin
4 x higher in copper
27% more antioxidant selenium.

All in all it is much easier for a puppy to digest and is unlikely to cause an upset stomach.

If you can stick to using goats milk to make scrambled egg it will be much better on your pups tummy.

Hi

Thanks for that

I am know using goats milk for them,They were on lactol

They are 4.5 weeks old, Not eating  great deal yet their mum is to good to them.

I agree I like my babies to have a varied diet as I do think it lessons the chance of them becoming fussy or intollerent to other foods as they get older. But not to varied they get a upset tum.

Cows Milk is designed to suit calves.

Many other animals and people find the lactose difficult /impossible to digest.

We are the only mammal to ingest milk, and that of a different species, after weaning.

Puppies only need their mothers milk, or failing that a properly formulated substitute,a dn cows milk is best avoided as it is one of the commonest things to cause allergic reactions.

For soem reason Goats milk causes fewer problems, in both people and dogs.
