so you're after wireless broadband? You still need a phone line though. You wouldn't be able to access internet without a phone line at all

Do you mean you want to have wireless in the house?   Firstly you will need a phone line, and then you will want to get a wireless router or similar.  The you can either get a laptop with wireless enabled or get a card and usb adapter to plug in to the laptop.  After abit of following instructions you have wireless set up in the house.

Hope you get this, I'm not good at explaining and really for me it's Dad who sets it up and ours is slighlty different as we have the connectiong going though a desktop.

We're on Blueyonder, that's not a telephone line, it's a cable straight into the house, which we have our wireless router plugged into, we run 5 computers from this one connection.

Also, if you have wireless on your laptop, you can pick up the 'hotspots' around the country

Strictly speaking you shouldn't do this as you are probably tapping into someone elses broadband connection.  You can get access from a number of places where there is a wifi connection, stations cafe's etc.  You need to get a laptop that has wifi.

Hi Kelly, do you want this laptop to travel with and access the internet when you aren't at home? You can do a couple of things. Use a cell phone to access a dial-up internet access which is slow but is sometimes the only option. Most new phones and laptops would connect via bluetooth for this. You can get laptops that have bluetooth built in or you can buy little USB bluetooth adapters. If you are out and about then there are some places that have wireless networking you can use. Some charge you for the service, some are free. With these you would use wi-fi. You can get a laptop with wi-fi built in or you can buy a wireless network card that you insert into the laptop. Hope that all makes sense. If not tell us exactly what you want to do with the laptop.

I think it's vodaphone that do a pay as you go slot in card for laptops, it means as long as you get a mobile signal you can use the net.
I was offered a free one with my laptop but didn;t take them up on it.

hurrah!  after speaking to some nice chappy from me mobile provider i can go online and check my mails through my phone! ;-) took forever though and made me feel like a proper useless girlie but it works now and that is all that matters, they are setting me up another email that will send straight to my phone like a text message, i think!  that bit not quite working yet though....
thanks,
kelly

Oh good, much cheaper than and lighter than a laptop. I'm glad you got sorted Kelly.

There are a lot of choices aren't there. There are a lot of smart phones now that let you check email so you don't have to limit yourself to a Blackberry. You might be able to upgrade your current phone to one that does email if you're happy with your service now. Good luck, I know it can be confusing.

A 3G card would allow you to get internet access wherever you are, so long as there is a mobile phone signal there. It would be fine for email & internet.Don't know how much they are as mine is supplied by my employers. They do need a sim card though, not sure if you could swap the sim from yoour mobile, mine has its own sim. It's made by vodafone.PC World should be able to give you some info on them.
