Any help with this, my 2 year old dobermann constantly whines.  He sometimes gives me a headache.  He follows me around the house.  I do make him stay downstairs when I go up to make the beds etc. otherwise he would lay on the floor in the bedroom as I am making the beds and doing the housework.  His bed is downstairs, so at night he is downstairs and we are up in bed, but he is allowed freely around the house, so he is not bothered about being apart.  He doesn't cry or whine during the night.  He also groans loads (but I think that is contentment groaning).  I have been told before that this is a dobermann thing.  Also when we come in after leaving him (if we have been out somewhere), he cries when we come in.

Many of the dobes I've met have been vocal - in fact very few dogs are totally silent all the time. My dals make a wide range of noises as they 'chat' to one another and us. :)

My dog whines a lot.  She whines to go out, she whines to come in.  She whines when we've finished eating.  She whines to be let in the living room and when she comes in she whines anyway.  I sing to her "Shaddupa yer face" but she still whines :D

On the plus side she does not bark a great deal, only when people pass the house.  Some dogs as far as I can make out bark as much as my dog whines so I look upon the whining as a positive rather than a negative.

One of my dals says "A-roooooooo!" whenever family comes in the house, so of course we politely say "Helloooooooo!" in return! Another will come up to you and grunt "Oooof" when he wants something. It can get quite conversational!

Hi dgibbo

Its definately a Dobe thing - my Dobe is 6 1/2 he grunts, groans, whines, purrs like a cat, makes a noise like a cow and a grunty noise bit like a pig!
Mine groans when he lies down, grunts cause he feels like it or when I am talking to him, purrs when you are stroking his ears, just before he nods off to sleep, lets out a huge grunty groan before bedtime (its like a huge sigh) But the whining does give me a headache too.
I would not worry about it, I would be worried if Max was quiet

It does get better with age so I was told but I am still waiting

I wouldn't worry. Having a vocal dog can be hilarious! Although for headache value would you like to borrow a JRT? He has a full range of barks from "strangled yip" - when left on the wrong side of the bathroom door - right through to "see off invisible things in the dark" which is a ferocious noise followed by tearing in through the back door like the Hounds of Hell were in pursuit.

So a quiet whine or two would be rather refreshing, to be honest!

Hi dqibbo
This is my 3rd dobe and yes they have all whinned. I have come to the conclusion that it is definately a Dobe thing. I take my boy to a trainning club which is all Dobes and when your standing there watching them it sounds quite funny as they are all there making the same racket
I was brought up with German Shepherds and Border Collies and although they do whinge a bit it's mainly when they want something!!.
To be honest none of mine eased up at all with the noises even as they got older

I have a whiney baby as well, and like yours he is fine when it's bed he must know thats it for the day. But during the day if we put him in the kitchen after he has been for a muddy walk he whines. Today we put him in the garage as i had just cleaned the kitchen floor. We can get to the garage through our house so we just moved the baby gate and he was whining as well as wagging his tail.
